It is with deep sadness that we announce the recent passing of Retired Lieutenant Steven Proscia, Shield #278.

Lieutenant Proscia proudly served our nation as a member of the United States Army Reserve before beginning his distinguished law enforcement career with the Paramus Police Department. He was appointed to the department on July 1, 1967, promoted to Patrol Sergeant on June 1, 1980, and subsequently promoted to Patrol Lieutenant on January 29, 1985.

Throughout his career, Lieutenant Proscia received numerous commendations and earned the respect of his fellow officers through his professionalism and commitment to the Paramus Police Department. After more than 25 years of faithful service to the Borough of Paramus, he retired on January 1, 1993.

Lieutenant Proscia's legacy and contributions to the Paramus Police Department will not be forgotten.

On behalf of the men and women of the Paramus Police Department, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Lieutenant Proscia's family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

We extend our congratulations to Det. Lt. Michael Cebulski, Jennifer Cebulski and Retired Captain Kevin Smith on being honored at the 2026 Paramus Catholic High School Legacy Gala. The three recipients are all graduates of Paramus Catholic HS and have continued to support the school in many ways.

The Paramus Police Department mourns the recent passing of retired Sergeant Alfred Gunderson.

After graduating from Paramus High School in 1964, He proudly served as an Air Police K-9 officer and was stationed in Phu Cat, Vietnam, alongside his beloved K-9 partner, King (A038). During his service in Vietnam, he also volunteered at a local orphanage, reflecting the compassion and generosity that defined his life.
He was granted an early discharge from the United States Air Force in order to join the Paramus Police Department, where he proudly served for 38 years, primarily in the Traffic Division. Al especially cherished his work with children’s safety programs, bringing smiles and guidance to countless young people through initiatives such as “Officer Phil” and McGruff the Crime Dog.
Following his retirement from the Paramus Police Department, he embraced a joyful new chapter in life by attending clown school and creating the beloved character “Dudley the Clown.” As Dudley, he volunteered countless hours at local hospitals and veterans facilities, where he especially loved bringing laughter and comfort to children and fellow veterans alike.
In 2000, together with several close friends, he helped establish the United States War Dogs Association and served on its Board of Directors for many years. In 2006, the association successfully raised more than $100,000 to commission and build the United States War Dog Memorial, located at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial.

We are appreciative of Sgt. Gunderson’s service to our country and his unwavering dedication to our community.
