Need to make room for some new books? Guess what...we have a book donation bin located right here at the recycling center! All you need is a book with a cover, and it should have a barcode somewhere on it. Toss it right in and it will be given a new home.

By all means please feel free to donate books to either local libraries as well! You have the Charles E. Reid library on Midland Ave and the Main Library on Century Rd. We believe in sharing the books! Perhaps one of the school libraries could benefit also! Take your pick on that one...there are quite a few!

For those have been wondering about our food waste reduction initiative...we are working on something for the new year but here is a quick glimpse at something to not only help YOU deal with food waste but also help others deal with food hardship. Rummage through those cabinets/fridges and look for items you could donate to the pantry! Just remember nothing dented/pitted/rusted and if it is cold, it should be kept to temperature. Expired items MAY be accepted depending on the circumstances but reach out to the Paramus food pantry first!

During the year 2027 (getting close) we will be posting more productive information on dealing with food waste! We might call it Food waste reduction Fridays! If you have a nifty name you think we should use let us know!!

Today is the first day of school for Paramus! Please use caution in the early mornings as our trucks are out doing collections trying to get the areas around schools first. This helps us keep traffic down around the schools, so parents/guardians and buses do not have to struggle to get through. If you find us on a side road please be extra cautious, pause a little before passing our trucks to avoid any possibility of a child crossing the road in an attempt to get to a bus stop or their home.

Still think they are "flushable"? While this is not our sewer system pictured here, we have mentioned several times before NOT to flush anything other than toilet paper. Even those wipes that claim to be flushable. Just because it CAN go down, doesn't mean it SHOULD!!! To prevent blockages in your line and the main line please DO NOT FLUSH WIPES DOWN THE TOILET! During the great TP shortage of 2020 we saw a lot of promos for bidets, perhaps this would be a better route. It certainly is the safer one for the sewer system!

Thursday reminder: Flush down only things you make yourself and paper from the roll. Everything else is a threat to sanitary sewer lines including "flushable" wipes that lie to themselves and to you. https://buff.ly/36GDaRt

💡Trivia Tuesday💡

I want to get involved with cleaning up litter around town, what programs can help me do this?

Good question!!! The DPW along with the Environmental commission host 2 clean ups a year. One in the Fall, which lucky enough is coming up! September 19th is our next event. You can sign up for that by filling out the registration form before September 8th - follow this link https://forms.gle/sP2cZEn5mTv9Rypp6

You can also get involved by contacting the DPW if you have a group such as a religious organization or scouts etc. and you wish to do your own 1 hour clean up or something we can provide you with some locations that are safe and public property so no one comes out screaming at you to get off their lawn!

If you are looking for something on a larger scale, reach out to ANJEC, or the Hackensack River keepers or any other environmental organizations.

You can also go right out to your own yard, if you have a brook in your back yard, or a storm basin that always collects "junk", or if you own a business and host your own mini clean up! If you do this, please be sure to tag us in photos! We LOVE to see the community coming together to make a difference, no matter how small or large the effort is! We do ask that if you choose to informally adopt a storm drain that you wear gloves, preferable a safety vest but AT LEAST bright colored clothes, closed toe shoes and do not attempt to lift the basin grates. If you think the basin is that dirty give us a call and we can come and flush the basin out.

Registration closes by 9:00AM Tuesday September 8th 2026
