The Gateway Cities COG is a proud partner of LACAHSA in creating new affordable housing and preventing homelessness in southeast County of Los Angeles. At the 2026 LACAHSA Housing Solutions Summit in beautiful Long Beach, Executive Director Hector De La Torre shared our take on LACAHSA's first year of impact with Measure A funding, and Regional Director Melani Smith accepted the Prevention in Action Award on behalf of the COG.

The Gateway Cities Council of Governments supported the City of Pico Rivera - Government on April 18th at their Earth Day Event. We tabled at this event alongside Empower Gateway who worked to enroll eligible residents in energy efficiency programs. Through funding from the Southern California Regional Energy Network, we were also able to provide food vouchers to volunteers from a tree planting event earlier in the day. We had such a great time and we are grateful to the City of Pico Rivera for bringing us to their Earth Day event!

📢 South Gate, we want to hear from YOU! 🌟

The City of South Gate is exploring a plan to transform the former courthouse into a Community Resiliency Center—a year-round hub for emergency preparedness, cooling & clean air spaces, youth programs, job training, health services, and small business support. 🏛️💨👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

The Gateway Cities Council of Governments hosted an Energy Resource Fair on April 15th at
Newstart Housing Corporation in Huntington Park. We invited organizations to join us and share their resources to the community. Upon entering, attendees were handed an event passport and those who completed it received a free drawstring goodie bag. Residents also listened to a presentation from our tabling organizations (GRID Alternatives, COFEM, Southern California Regional Energy Network, ACES Pathway, Empower Gateway, Newstart Housing Corporation) and were able to ask questions. In total, we had 70 residents come out to this event and enroll in eligible energy efficiency programs. Thank you to the Southern California Regional Energy Network for funding this work!

Since 2025, the Gateway Cities Council of Governments has brought the Kits for Kids program to our cities. Kits for Kids is a free program through the Southern California Regional Energy Network that provides free energy efficiency item boxes to 3rd and 4th grade students. We were able to reach 6 school districts (Lynwood Unified School District, Compton Unified School District, KIPP SoCal Public Schools, Whittier City School District, South Whittier School District, Paramount Unified School District) and 1 private school (Santa Fe Springs Christian School) totaling 2,247 students and families who received these free kits.

In January, we celebrated Lynwood Unified School Districtor their participation in Kits for Kids and enrollment in the SoCalREN Public Agency Program. We played an energy efficiency bingo with the 4th grade students and celebrated their teachers for bringing the program to Will Rogers Elementary School

If your district isn’t enrolled in Kits for Kids, please reach out! We would love to bring the Kits for Kids program to your classrooms. You can email Melissa Godfrey at [email protected] to learn more.
