Summary: Firefighters continue to make progress on the McConnell Fire, which remains at 33,241 acres and 83% contained. Fire activity on Sunday was minimal, with smoldering and creeping observed primarily in brush and heavy dead-and-down fuels. Moisture in fine fuels and cooler overnight temperatures continue to limit fire behavior, and no fire growth is expected.
Crews continue working to secure the remaining uncontained portions of the fire. On the east side, firefighters are cold trailing and strengthening direct and indirect line in the Eagle Creek area. Crews in Cottonwood Creek are patrolling and improving containment lines where needed. On the south side, firefighters will patrol and strengthen existing fireline, while on the northeast side, crews continue mop-up and suppression repair. Suppression repair work is also ongoing on the west side of the fire toward Hinkey Summit road.
Weather and Fire Behavior: A cold front moved across the area Sunday evening, bringing scattered showers and a period of gusty north winds. Monday will be slightly warmer, with temperatures in the 60s and afternoon relative humidity dropping into the 20% range. Winds are expected to be light and terrain-driven throughout the day. Fire behavior is forecast to remain minimal, consisting of isolated smoldering and creeping well interior from the fireβs perimeter. A warming and drying trend is expected through midweek.
This update reflects incident conditions following the transition to the Type 3 Wyoming Team 3, which assumed command at 1800 on September 6.
Closures: The closure area for the McConnell fire in the Santa Rosa Ranger District has been scaled back. Hinkey Summit Road, Lye Creek Campground and Buckskin Road are all open. See Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Order 04-17-26-10-03. Expect firefighter activity along Hinkey Summit Road. Please drive with caution and respect all firefighter and equipment traffic.
Stage 1 Fire Restrictions remain in place for the region. For details, visit nevadafireinfo.org/restrictions.
