The Orange County Clerk's Office is closed today, Monday, September 7th in observance of Labor Day.

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.

Many Americans celebrate Labor Day with parades and parties – festivities very similar to those outlined by the first proposal for a holiday, which suggested that the day should be observed with – a street parade to exhibit "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day.

Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement.

American labor has raised the nation’s standard of living and contributed to the greatest production the world has ever known and the labor movement has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pays tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom, and leadership – the American worker.

Since 1920, there has been a member of the Faulkner family binding and rebinding city, county and state record books throughout Indiana. In 2022, Chris Faulkner and his son Conner, third and fourth generation book binders repaired and rebound 23 books at the Orange County Clerk's Office dating back to 1816. Since that time, Conner has taken over the family business and each year I ask him to return. To date, 105 of our original record books have been repaired using the same techniques as were used over 100 years ago. All work is done on site, using animal hide glue, Irish linen thread, woven canvas and hand stamping the dates on the cover. The repair of these books is paid for from the Clerk's Record Perpetuation Fund. This fund is supplied by user fees only, not tax dollars. The Clerk's Record Perpetuation Fund is exclusively for the preservation of records, improvement of record keeping systems and case management.

The Orange County Republican Party regrets to announce the passing of James Randall Clark, Orleans Town Council Member, Ward 2.
In accordance with Indiana Code 3-13-11 and the Rules of the Indiana Republican State Committee, a caucus of the Orleans Republican Precinct Committeemen will be held on Monday, June 15, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the Orleans Town Hall Building, 161 E. Price Avenue, Orleans, Indiana 47452.

The purpose of the caucus is to fill the vacancy in the office of Orleans Town Council Member, Ward 2.

Individuals interested in being considered for the appointment must complete a CEB-5 Declaration of Candidacy and submit it to Chad Hager, Chairman of the Orange County Republican Party, or Elizabeth Jones, Secretary of the Orange County Republican Party, no later than Friday, June 12, 2026.

To be eligible, a candidate must:

Be a registered voter residing in Orleans Ward 2 as required by I.C. 36-5-6-3;
Have voted Republican in the last two Indiana primary elections; or
If the candidate does not meet the voting history requirement, attach to the CEB-5 a certification from the county chairman stating that the candidate is a member of the Republican Party.

The CEB-5 form is available on the Indiana Secretary of State's website or may be obtained from the Orange County Clerk's Office.
