Happy Spring, Paola!
As much as I thoroughly enjoy the warmer weather and the longer days, the storms we’ve seen in our area recently sure took a toll. I feel for everyone that’s been affected in one way or another and I know there are thousands of us!
Speaking of the storm, the damage caused in our city brought on an onslaught of solicitors to City Hall. Anyone wanting to go door to door for business in Paola is required to go by City Hall and apply for a Solicitor’s permit. This is one way city staff can vet the individuals that are out and about and make sure they are with a legitimate business. Please don’t ever hesitate to ask to see someone’s permit.
Whether it’s the planning department processing building permits for repairs, the staff that processed the solicitor’s permits and answered all the extra calls, the police department or fire department that were doing a variety of duties to keep everyone safe, or the public works department manning lots and lots of clean up, I just want to say “THANK YOU.” Our staff had to navigate through so much extra with the storms these past couple of weeks. Please show them your appreciation if you get the chance.
Although the warmer weather has brought on storm season, it is also giving us lots of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors! If you’re in the area this weekend, you must check out the Miami County Spring Farm Tour! It is so much fun and a great way to spend some time with family on Mother’s Day weekend. Check out miamicountykansasagritourism.org for more information.
Are you ready for Mother’s Day? If you haven’t yet found your perfect gift, there are plenty of local options! Whether it’s a gift card to a local restaurant or coffee shop, a treat from Good Day Ice Cream or Talk of the Town, some goodies from Fire Lake Soapery, Adorned on Gold, Lola’s or Bella B Decor, or a vintage find from one of our thrift stores, there are some great gifts for moms right here in town! You could also get her the gift of a facial, massage, or salon services at any of our self care shops! Support and shop local as often as you can! It helps our community as a whole.
As we’re entering May and the official kickoff to summer in a few weeks, I want to make you aware of a few things. First of all, we are in the early stages of a Downtown Master Plan. Be watching the local media outlets, the City's website and page for information on how to be engaged in that process. Public input in this planning process is vital to its success! Also, don’t forget to check out the schedule of events at the Paola Community Center, Music and the Market, and the Miami County Historical Museum. We’ve also got the Paola Heartland Car Show coming up June 13th and a 250th Birthday celebration at the lake on July 3rd. We’ve got new pickleball courts coming to Wallace Park and a pool open soon! So many fun things to do in the summertime here! Take some time to enjoy it all!
