Over the weekend, our local volunteer firefighters remained extremely busy. With the high winds and warm temperatures, it was a perfect storm for fires to create chaos throughout Miami County. Thankfully, these men and women remained steadfast, working to ensure that what started small did not become a larger-scale event. Even so, multiple agencies had to work together to accomplish their missions.

It appears that the Louisburg, Osawatomie, Paola, and Fontana Fire Departments responded to 25 calls for service over the weekend, including 3 fire investigations, 17 field fires, 1 HAZ-MAT incident, 2 injury accidents, and 2 vehicle fires. Fontana responded to 7 incidents, Louisburg responded to 8 incidents, while Osawatomie and Paola each responded to 12 incidents. 100 controlled burns were logged by dispatch.

Many of these incidents took several hours to complete. These men and women volunteer their time and often miss work, family events, and meals while serving their communities. If you are looking for ways to help your local fire departments, you can reach out to them directly, as they accept water, Gatorade, and financial donations to help purchase meals.

Thank you to these men and women for your dedication to protecting Miami County.

Firefighters worked a house fire this morning at 105 E Wea. At 6:34 a.m. the home owner called 911 reporting their house was full of smoke. Crews located the fire below the fire place in the basement of the home. The fire was quickly knocked down but crews remained on scene for several hours searching for hot spots. This is a good reminder to have your fire place inspected annually. Additional assistance was provided by Louisburg Fire Department, Osawatomie Volunteer Fire Department, Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No. 1 - Kansas, Miami County EMS, and Paola Police Department.

With many newer smoke alarms featuring 10-year batteries, the messaging around smoke alarms and batteries has evolved.

As begins this Sunday, remember to adjust your clocks and check your smoke alarm batteries—only if needed. Don't forget to test your alarms monthly.
