Today, the United States Coast Guard joins the entire Nation in honoring the brave men and women across all branches of our Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Whether on land, at sea, in the air, or in space, those who gave their lives in defense of our freedoms share a unified legacy of courage, service, and devotion. On this Memorial Day, we remember our fallen heroes in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard.

We stand with their families, loved ones, and communities today and always. The weight of their sacrifice spans across every branch, and their memories will never be forgotten.

Semper Paratus.

Spring lines are very useful when doing many different tasks on the water, from docking, towing, launching, and retrieving your vessel from a public launch. Knowing how and when to use a spring line is important. While most of us won't use one for towing it is handy for docking and launching your vessel.

What do they do? Spring lines help when docked with wind blowing parallel to your vessel from being pushed from its secured position. We can have a bow or stern spring line that will run from midship cleat to the dock cleat used for our bow line, the same for the stern line from midship to the stern cleat.

This is also useful on windy days when docking using a spring line when close to the dock, and the wind is working to push you away, using a spring line to keep your vessel close and also allow for you to pull your vessel into the dock at a controlled rate. The same when casting off the spring line offers control, allowing you to easily get away from the dock.
