NEDU marked a milestone on February 26, 2026. Cmdr. Dustin R. Cunningham was relieved by Cmdr. Nicholas B. Artabazon as the commanding officer of Navy Experimental Diving Unit during the 19th change of command ceremony. Capt. John P. Bauer. Supervisor of Salvage and Diving, served as the presiding officer for the ceremony and former NEDU Commanding Officer, Capt. Jay A. Young, served as the guest speaker.

This momentous event also marked the retirement of Cmdr. Cunningham as he said farewell to not just three remarkable years at NEDU, but 20 years of unwavering dedication to the Navy. During his tenure, Cmdr. Cunningham oversaw the completion of over 150 high-risk operations and experimental research protocols and continued to advance warfighting capabilities across the diving Navy, joint force, and interagency partners.

Cmdr. Artabazon, a native of Richmond, VA, served at NEDU from 2019-2021 as the Test and Evaluation Department Head. He is an Engineering Duty Officer and Diving Officer.

This week, NEDU had the honor of celebrating the advancement of four Sailors to Chief Petty Officer. It was a privilege to watch them receive their anchors and to recognize the hard work, grit, and perseverance that carried them through the season. Our command is stronger because of our Chiefs we have here, and the devotion and service they bring to the command every single day.

Congratulations to NDC Trevor Cochran, NDC Patrick Foreman, NDC Thomas Seymour, and NDC Christopher Brewer – welcome to the Mess! We also want to acknowledge all of our Chiefs at NEDU for making the season meaningful and continuing to shape the next generation of leaders for the Navy Special Operations community.

Earlier this week, NEDU had the unique opportunity to hold a promotion ceremony in our experimental test pool for our very own Research Physiologist LCDR Brian Williams. Williams was selected last year for promotion and officially pinned on his new rank with family, friends, and teammates during this one-of-a-kind ceremony. We are proud to recognize his achievements and grateful for the expertise, dedication, and impact he brings to NEDU’s mission every day. Congratulations, LCDR Williams!
