Close the Gap California

Close the Gap California We are closing the gender gap in the California Legislature by recruiting progressive women to run.

To identify and recruit great women, we are partnering with women's organizations in the progressive advocacy communities focused on fighting poverty and the wage gap, fighting to improve our public schools, and working to ensure affordable access to healthcare for women and their families. We also collaborate with women's civic and political organizations. Our goal: to recruit policy-minded progr

essive women to run for open seats between 2022 and 2028! Women are 48 percent of the California State Legislature today.

Friday fun post from The 19th News

ICYMI back in July Kelsey Pfendler completed a 43 day journey rowing solo from Monterey, California, to Honolulu — a distance of about 2,400 miles.

"Pfendler, 32, initially set sail on May 21, aiming to become the youngest woman and the first U.S. woman to row this route solo. On July 3, she not only completed that mission, but she also became the fastest person of any gender to row across the mid-Pacific Ocean.

The previous recordholder is a man who rowed the mid-Pacific in 52 days in 2014. The fastest woman to row the mid-Pacific before Pfendler made the journey in 86 days in 2020. "

California’s powerful Labor movement is a prime sector that Close the Gap recruiters look to when searching for and vetting bold, qualified women to run in our target districts.

The rich history of Labor giants in the State Legislature includes friends of CTG Senator María Elena Durazo and Assemblymember Liz Ortega, as well as former Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez and former Senator Connie Leyva. We thank them for their leadership!

We’re proud of the CTG legislators with union roots, and those who champion workers, families and women through their work in the State Capitol. Check out CTG Legislators with bills featured in the California Federation of Labor Unions’ 2026 Legislative Agenda.

This Labor Day weekend, we’re sending a special shout-out to those on the front lines for workers - your commitment to promoting fair treatment for all is crucial and we honor you today (and always!).

State and local leaders who share our values are our best and last defense against eroding federal protections.

Thank you for helping us Close the Gap--and thank a union member today!

A message about the passing of Gloria Steinem from Executive Director Susannah Delano.

Having the opportunity to interview Gloria Steinem in 2020 about her epic lifetime of advocacy and journalism was a top tier life moment for me, and a serious boost to our work at Close the Gap in a challenging time.

We met over Zoom that spring as the Covid pandemic peaked, her from her New York apartment, me from my Oakland warehouse, both of us with our cats.

I shared with her that when I told my parents about the interview, my then-72-year-old feminist father immediately–and emotionally–ran out to the garage to look for his copy of the first-ever issue of Ms. magazine. Gloria’s groundbreaking feminist publication popularized an honorific for women that didn’t define her identity based on her marital status, challenged traditional gender roles, and spotlighted reproductive freedom, racial justice, sexual harassment in the workplace, and so much more. The consciousness Ms. raised directly informed my upbringing, and its enormous impact on movements and culture lives on today.

We are so grateful for her generosity of time and spirit. Listening to Gloria speak is a way for all of us to reflect on the progress we truly have made, and get fired up for all the work left to do.

CTG is inspired by Steinem’s tireless, life-long activism and eternal drive for progress. Our deepest sympathies go out to her friends and family. We will miss her so much.
