Palo Alto remembers those who lost their lives and pays tribute to the heroes who sacrificed so much to save others on September 11, 2001. The flags outside Palo Alto City Hall, the Municipal Service Center, and all City buildings and fire stations are being flown at half-staff in commemoration.

News Release: The City has finalized an $8 million settlement, ending a legal dispute with Swinerton Builders. The legal dispute prompted a review of City project practices and formalizing best practices through City policy and procedural changes. The City of Palo Alto, San Francisco Estuary Partnership, and regional and state partners announced today the completion of the Palo Alto Horizonal Levee Pilot project, a first in the Bay Area to use a nature-based solution protecting against sea level rise and improving marsh habitat in the San Francisco Bay. This innovative project will inform how future large-scale “living levee” projects of this kind might be used to help the Bay Area adapt to sea level rise. Join us today from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. to celebrate the completion of the Horizontal Levee! Hear from regional leaders, a ribbon-cutting and inaugural community trail walk, officially recognizing the relocated and widened trail connection, connecting hikers and bikers to the Baylands Nature Preserve trail and San Francisco Bay trail systems.

This has been in the works since 2017 with construction beginning last September. We're excited to honor the completion of this project that will protect our shoreline communities against sea level rise.

Join Palo Alto and regional leaders, community members and local organizations on Thursday, September 10, at 11 a.m. to celebrate the completion of the Horizontal Levee. The event will include remarks from community leaders, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and an inaugural community walk along the newly relocated and widened trail. This improved connection links hikers and bicyclists to the Baylands Nature Preserve and San Francisco Bay Trail networks.

The Horizontal Levee is the first project in the Bay Area dedicated to planning ways to protect against sea level rise and enhance habitat in the San Francisco Bay.
