City offices are closed tomorrow in honor of Juneteenth – the unofficial shortening of June Nineteenth – which is the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people were freed.

In 1979, Texas became the first state to make Juneteenth an official holiday. In 2021, Congress passed a resolution establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Today, Juneteenth is a day to remember and celebrate the long journey toward freedom and equality for all Americans.

These moments of recognition reflect our appreciation for the employees who help keep our city running each day. Thank you to all of our staff members for the professionalism, teamwork, and dedication you bring to serving Palmetto.

Happy Flag Day, Palmetto! 🇺🇸

There have been many changes to the flag since the original was adopted in 1777 with 13 stars and 13 stripes representing the original American colonies. The one we fly today is the longest running iteration of Old Glory since no states have been added to the union since 1959.

Take time today to remember what the flag represents, and if you’re flying one at home or work, be sure it’s displayed with respect.
