I was out doing some training flights with Pumpkin today in the field and I ran across a wonderful photographer named Ed. He took some pictures of Pumpkin and was kind enough to send them to me. After the program this weekend, Atka the 15 year old bald eagle was in need of a coping. What is a coping you may ask?

I'm glad you asked! Coping is the act of maintaining the birds beak and talons to shape them back to their ideal form. Why is this necessary? Another great question! In captivity the birds diet is very rich in nutrients and can cause the birds beak and talons to grow faster than normal. In the wild birds will cope their beaks naturally as they break into bones and rip meat off the bones of their prey. Many of the injured birds that are taken care of in captivity can no longer rip and tear their food to the extent that they used to due to injury.

So in captivity we offer them ways to cope their beak as naturally as possible but it is necessary most times to have to go in and trim their beak and talons on a regular basis to maintain their health. This is similar to trimming a dog or cats nails for them. The beak and talons are made of keratin just like our nails and hair!

After the program yesterday with Horizon Wings and the Last Green Valley, Atka was due for a beak and talon trimming. Thanks to David Stevens, a licensed falconer from CT, for helping with holding Atka.

I'll post a few more photos later that we have of the process and a bit of information about why we do it!
