This morning, the Palmer Police Department hosted a joint training session with the Palmer Fire Department, Three Rivers Fire Department, and Bondsville Fire Department focused on scene safety considerations for first responders.

The training was designed to enhance responder safety and interagency coordination during emergency incidents. Participants received instruction on hazard identification, crime scene awareness, and evidence preservation, all of which play a critical role in ensuring both responder safety and the integrity of subsequent investigations.

Integrated training opportunities such as these strengthen collaboration between public safety agencies and are essential to the safety of our responders, the success of investigations, and the continued protection of the communities we serve.

Thank you to the Palmer Police Department for coordinating this valuable training opportunity.

Police Week serves as a time of remembrance for those who have lost their lives protecting communities from coast to coast. As we observe this year’s commemoration, we are reminded of the inherent dangers that come with the profession and the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers each day.

We continue to serve our community with pride, honor, and dedication while remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

In 2026, the Commonwealth lost two police officers in the line of duty. We pause to honor the memory of Trooper Kevin Trainor of the Massachusetts State Police and Officer Stephen LaPorta of the Uxbridge Police Department.

We also remember Deputy Sheriff George Bills of the Palmer Police Department, who was shot and killed while attempting to apprehend a fleeing suspect on February 25, 1919. Deputy Sheriff Bills was fatally wounded at the Palmer train station while assisting Officer Charles and Springfield Police Lieutenant James Daly during the arrest attempt. Lieutenant Daly and Officer Charles were both injured during the gunfight.

Although the suspect was ultimately apprehended, Deputy Sheriff Bills succumbed to his injuries.

Please take a moment this week to remember and honor those who are no longer with us.

It is both an honor and a privilege to serve the Palmer community. Thank you for your continued support.

History
In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
