A Throwback Thursday post with a story:
Racquet Club Cottages resident Brent Swift found this photo of Peter Sellars sitting by the property’s pool and was inspired to recreate the screen door he saw in the background of the photo.
Today most residences at RCCW have this door created by Brent’s team.

This write-up announcing that our “garden villas” (or cottages) of the Racquet Club resort were becoming available for purchase was printed 42 years ago today in a local newspaper 🗞️

“PALM SPRINGS - Ed Potter, president of the Racquet Club of Palm Springs has announced that the private club is offering for public sale 37 Garden Villas within the walls of the playground known for its celebrity members.
Since opening more than 46 years ago, the Racquet Club roster has had the greatest names in motion picture history, including Clark Gable, Katherine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy and Carole Lombard. Today, the club includes many of the most respected names in business and industry, and many people consider the Racquet Club as one of the most sought after clubs in California.
The Racquet Club’s Garden Villas are similar in concept to Hollywood’s fabled Garden of Allah with private bungalows surrounded by fragrant flower gardens and mature groves of Japanese pines.
Because of the perimeter parking plan, the automobile is banished from view once one is inside the intimate colony. Several of the classic villas front a small stream which flows through the property.
Each Garden Villas has been fully furnished and decorated by a leading interior design firm. All units have private sunbathing patios and are connected by landscaped pathways to a spacious swimming pool with jetting fountains. Magnificent views of snowcapped Mount San Jacinto are prevalent throughout the property.
The club is offering two floor plans: a bachelor unit priced at $84,500, and a 1-bedroom villa, listed at $129,500 and upward. All Garden Villas have full kitchens with refrigerators, stoves, ovens and a full compliment of decorator-selected draperies and accessories.
For purchasers who become members of the Racquet Club, a number of services are available: room service from the club’s kitchen; telephone switchboard with message center; valet; car and driver; masseur; tennis pro; maid service and use of the club’s 12 tennis courts, the dining room and bar.
Two furnished models are open for inspection daily from 9:30 a.m. until dusk. Racquet Club Garden Villas are located at 2743 N. Indian Avenue.”

Did you know before Racquet Club Cottages West were homes they were origianlly part of the famed Racquet Club Resort?  Begining in 1960 our cottages offered Hollywood celebs and other elite guests long-term stays with all the luxuries the resort offered complete with house keeping, room service, and these telephones providing easy access to the concierge and front desk!
