When the chase ended in an arrest and a lesson in proper breathing techniques. 🏃🧘

K9 Officer Jones observed an individual known to have outstanding warrants. When Ofc. Jones attempted to make contact, the individual immediately decided cardio was the better option and fled on foot. A pursuit ensued.

After a brief period of evaluating his life choices, the individual noticed Ofc. Jones still had plenty of gas left in the tank and wisely elected to surrender. He was taken into custody after determining that further cardio was not in his best interest.

A search incident to arrest revealed suspected methamphetamine in the individual’s possession. He was arrested for his felony warrants as well as additional on-view charges and was later transported to jail without incident.

Today, we had the opportunity to spend time with members of our community during our Walk with a Cop event focused on pedestrian safety.

We were grateful for the great turnout and the many conversations that took place along the way. While pedestrian safety gave us a reason to gather, the discussions covered much more than traffic safety. We talked about life in general, what brought people to Palm Springs, what makes our community unique, and the experiences that have shaped the people who call this city home.

These conversations are one of the best parts of events like this. They give us a chance to slow down, listen, learn from one another, and connect outside of emergency calls and enforcement activity. Building relationships and understanding the people we serve helps strengthen the sense of community that makes Palm Springs such a special place.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the walk. We appreciate the time, stories, and perspectives you shared, and we look forward to doing it again.

Press Release: Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation

On Thursday, May 28, 2026, at approximately 3:41 p.m., Palm Springs Police Department officers responded to the 1200 block of East Palm Canyon Drive regarding a report of a subject brandishing a weapon.

The subject was described as an adult Hispanic male wearing a dark-colored shirt and jeans. A caller reported the male was acting erratically and was armed with a knife, which he allegedly brandished at employees at the location.

Officers located the subject on the property and attempted to establish communication with him. Recognizing the subject’s erratic behavior, officers utilized de-escalation efforts, deployed less-lethal options, and utilized the assistance of the department’s Community Behavioral Assessment Team (CBAT) in an effort to peacefully resolve the situation.

During the interaction, an officer-involved shooting occurred.

Palm Springs Fire Department personnel provided medical care to the subject. The subject was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The identity of the decedent is being withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Force Investigation Division (FID) is conducting a thorough and impartial investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Upon completion, the findings will be submitted to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office for review.

The Palm Springs Police Department’s Professional Standards Division is conducting a concurrent investigation into the incident in accordance with department policy.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or may have additional information, photographs, or video related to the investigation is encouraged to contact the Palm Springs Police Department at (760) 327-1441. Anonymous tips may also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at (760) 341-STOP (7867).

While conducting routine patrol, IMPACT Team Officer Brown spotted a vehicle driven by a wanted felony suspect. Officer Brown initiated a traffic stop and safely took the subject into custody.

During a search incident to arrest, officers discovered approximately one pound of suspected methamphetamine. The investigation didn’t stop there…Team IMPACT continued their work at the suspect’s residence, where they located an additional pound of suspected methamphetamine along with a shotgun.

Officer Brown’s effort earned him the Top Gun Award and the bragging rights that come with it. More importantly, his name will now be added to a growing tradition recognizing those who go above and beyond through proactive enforcement efforts that remove illegal fi****ms from our streets.

Outstanding work by Officer Brown and the IMPACT Team in keeping dangerous drugs and a weapon off our streets. A win for Officer Brown and the IMPACT Team is a win for TEAM PSPD! 💪🚔

Today, the Palm Springs Police Department was proud to see Police Services Manager Heather Topliff recognized with the 2026 Special Achievement Award for Outstanding Service, presented by Hugo Loyola, Chair of the Palm Springs Human Rights Commission, on behalf of Veterans of Peace.

Over the past two years, Heather has led the Police Department’s Administrative Services Division with professionalism, resilience, and a clear commitment to our mission of Exemplary Service. In a role that often operates behind the scenes but is critical to daily operations, she has managed significant challenges, including a rare desert hurricane, multiple catastrophic 9-1-1 system failures, staffing shortages, and the ongoing demands of overseeing one of the department’s most essential functions.

Heather’s responsibilities are extensive, from managing confidential records and complex document review processes to overseeing the Dispatch Center, the critical link connecting our community to police, fire, and medical emergency services. Through each challenge, she has remained steady, solutions-focused, and deeply committed to both the organization and the professional staff she leads.

What stands out just as much as her expertise is the genuine care she has for her team. Heather leads with compassion, professionalism, and a positive attitude that strengthens the people around her and reflects the very best of the Palm Springs Police Department.

We are incredibly proud of Heather and grateful to see her dedication recognized with this well-deserved honor. Congratulations, Heather.

Memorial Day is a time to pause and remember the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our nation.

Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy today, and their legacy lives on through the families, friends, and communities who continue to carry their memory.

We also recognize the veterans within our department and throughout our community whose service reflects a commitment to something greater than self.

As many spend the day with family and friends, we encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day and honor those who never made it home.

We remember. We honor. We are grateful.

This week, we had the privilege of recognizing Dispatcher Allan Mader as he signed off for the final time after an extraordinary career in public safety communications.

Allan began his dispatch career in 1994 with the San Jose Police Department before joining the Palm Springs Police Department in November 1999, where he dedicated the next 26 and a half years to serving our department, our officers, and this community.

Over more than three decades in public safety, Allan served in critical roles including SWAT dispatcher, supervisor, recruiter, and mentor. His calm voice during high-stress incidents and commitment to helping develop the next generation of dispatchers left a lasting mark on this department.

Public safety dispatching is a profession that often goes unseen by the public, but those who wear the headset know the weight that comes with it. Dispatchers are the steady voice in chaos, the first connection during someone’s worst moment, and the unseen lifeline coordinating help when seconds matter. It takes resilience, professionalism, compassion, and grit.

Allan embodied all of that.

Thank you for 32 years of service, Dispatcher Mader. Your Palm Springs Police Department family wishes you a long, healthy, and well-earned retirement.

Dispatch 14… you’re clear, 10-7.
