Let There Be Light
College of the Desert's Astronomy Club began as a gathering of students with an interest in the stars. Although the club began small, it quickly caught the eye of people around COD, and the valley who also wondered about the heavens above.
With the passing of time, more students began to join in on the outreach the bigger the crowds we drew. Now people of all ages and interest level join in on our Star Parties, and presentations.
The College of the Desert Mecca/Thermal Campus received a donation from Ivoj Kudrnac of a 1 - Meter state of the art telescope with the hopes of the young people of the Coachella Valley would look up in wonder just as he did. Named in honor of his late partner, the Mary Reagan Observatory is capable of peering into deep space and imaging celestial bodies like the Spindle Galaxy (NGC 3115) which is 32 million light years away. After Ivoj passed away, the COD Astronomy Club intends to keep his, and many others dream of looking up in wonder alive.
