💧 Rainfall deficits continue across the District

While recent rainfall has brought some relief, much of the St. Johns River Water Management District continues to experience significant rainfall deficits.

Our latest 12-month rainfall data shows deficits ranging from less than an inch in Brevard County to nearly 20 inches in Baker County, with some of the largest deficits occurring across the northern portion of the District.

🚧 Apopka-Beauclair Lock Closure

The Apopka-Beauclair Lock will be temporarily closed to navigation from Monday, Sept. 14, through Thursday, Sept. 17, for a scheduled inspection of the lock’s concrete and steel structure.

The lock is expected to reopen and resume normal operations on Friday, Sept. 18.

Eligible K–12 public and charter school educators within the St. Johns River Water Management District have less than two weeks left to submit applications for the Blue School Grant program.

Funding of up to $3,000 per teacher or school is available to support projects that help students develop an appreciation for Florida’s water resources and the importance of water conservation.

The St. Johns River Water Management District protects more than 775,000 acres of conservation land, including floodplain wetlands that play a critical role in flood protection.

Just how much water can these natural systems hold?

🌊 The Upper St. Johns River Basin stores an estimated 500,000 acre-feet of water.
🌊 The Upper Ocklawaha River Basin can store up to 62,200 acre-feet of rainfall.

A single gopher tortoise burrow can provide shelter for more than 350 species, making these remarkable reptiles a keystone species in Florida's upland ecosystems.

At the St. Johns River Water Management District, protecting these habitats is part of our mission. Through land conservation, responsible stewardship, and habitat management across more than 775,000 acres of public lands, the District helps conserve the natural landscapes that support gopher tortoises and the hundreds of species that depend on their burrows.
