The City of Palatka is happy to start the 2026 Summer Internship Program and welcome 17 local students who were chosen to join us this summer. These students, from schools across Putnam County, will get hands-on experience by working with City staff in different departments. They will learn about local government, public service, and career options. This program aims to prepare future leaders by offering real work experience, mentorship, and a look at how City services affect our community each day.

One of our summer interns has joined the Communications Office and is already helping to create fun and engaging social media campaigns for the community.

We are excited to kick off one of our summer social media campaigns, "Where Am I Wednesday" and "Reveal Thursday." These will highlight unique places, hidden gems, and interesting facts around Palatka. We hope you enjoy these interactive campaigns and invite everyone to join in by liking and sharing.

With temperatures rising in Palatka, it’s important to know the signs of heat-related illness. Heat stroke is a serious emergency that can happen quickly during very hot and humid weather. Watch for symptoms like a fast heartbeat, hot or red skin, dizziness, headache, confusion, vomiting, or fainting.
To stay safe, drink plenty of water, avoid outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, wear light clothing, and take breaks in cool or shaded places. If someone shows signs of heat stroke, call 911 right away and help them get to a cooler spot while you wait for help. Being prepared and aware can help keep you and your family safe this summer.

πŸ“’Safety MessageπŸ“’

As the weather heats up in Northeast Florida, the Palatka Fire Department reminds parents and caregivers not to leave children alone in cars. Even when it feels mild outside, the inside of a parked car can quickly become dangerous. Get in the habit of checking the back seat every time you leave your car, and put something important like your purse, phone, or briefcase back there to help you remember. Always lock your car and keep the keys where children can't reach them to avoid accidents. A quick check can save a life. Look before you lock.

We were honored to welcome members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation who stopped by to recognize Lt. Lee, Detective Johnson, and Detective Burger for their swift response and willingness to assist in a multi-agency, multi-jurisdictional investigation involving a missing 16-year-old girl out of Ohio.

Through the coordinated efforts of federal, state, and local law enforcement partners, the juvenile was safely recovered in Palatka and a suspect was taken into custody.

Cases like this highlight the importance of strong partnerships, communication, and the dedication of law enforcement officers who are committed to protecting victims and bringing offenders to justice. We are proud of the professionalism, teamwork, and commitment displayed by our personnel during this investigation.

Thank you to all agencies involved for their collaboration and commitment to a safe outcome.
