Marsha P. Johnson is the next person in our pride month spotlight series!

Marsha P. Johnston was a black trans women, drag performer and one of the most prominent figures in the gay rights movement. She co-founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries with Sylvia Rivera, (who was featured last on last week’s Pride spotlight). At the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York City Marsha actively protested systemic police harassment and discrimination, helping to ignite the modern gay liberation movement. She also was a huge advocate for HIV and AIDS. Having been diagnosed with HIV herself she advanced for better healthcare and more research for those suffering.

Happy Pride Month!
We are a week into the month of June and week into celebrating all the accomplishments LGBTQ+ people have made in our democracy. In this month it is important to remember those who fought hard for these rights. Which is why every Monday of this month we will be spotlighting a historical figure who had an impact on obtaining rights for the LGBTQ+ community.
Happy Pride!
