We are also sad to announce the recent passing of long-time firefighter Eugene “Gene” (Robert) Royce, who served with the Wellston Fire Protection District in 1972 until it was changed to the Mid-County Fire Protection District, and served the citizens faithfully until his retirement in 2014 after 41 years of service. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this most difficult time.

We are sad to announce the recent passing of retired firefighter Kent Bessinger. He served our citizens faithfully at Mid-County from 1985-2014, retiring after 29 years of service. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this most difficult time.

Kent M. Bessinger, age 68, passed away in 2026 from heart disease, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, service, and family. Above all, Kent was a devoted father to his three sons—Logan, Grant, and Daniel—who were the center of his life and his greatest pride. A retired firefighter with the…

At approximately 6:50am on April 9th, Mid-County FPD, Northeast FPD, North County Fire and Rescue, Berkeley FD, University City FD, Ferguson FD, St. Louis City FD, Community FPD, Metro North FPD responded to reports of a residential structure fire. First unit on scene reported light smoke coming from 2nd floor. Once an Officer was able to do a 360° walk around the structure, heavy fire was reported and crews were ordered to evacuate, as the fire grew very rapidly and was unable to be contained. A 2nd alarm was struck after the evacuation. The fire was successfully extinguished, the residents were able to make it out of the structure safely, and nobody was injured.

This morning at approximately 7:45 your Mid-County firefighters, along with mutual aid partners, were dispatched to a commercial structure fire in a two-family residence. First arriving crews encountered black smoke coming from the front door upon arrival. All occupants had safely evacuated the building, but informed crews that a dog was trapped in the basement. STL City Fire was on fire suppression. Mid-County FPD crew and UCFD crews made their way into the building and began conducting search efforts. Mid-County FPD crew found the dog in the basement hiding behing the washing machine, rushed him outside, and passed him off to the crew that had oxygen and a dog mask. After some oxygen, the little guy was doing well and more than happy to be reunited with his family!! Big thanks to our mutual aid companies, as well as move-ups!

Today was Firefighter/Paramedic Nick Alderton’s last day of probation. He has spent the last year working hard to learn all about how the crews operate, the equipment on our apparatus, and as much about the district as possible. He has been assigned to B crew throughout the duration of his probationary period, and will continue to serve our citizens on B crew. Congrats Big Nick!!!!

Yesterday was a busy afternoon for your Mid County firefighters. At approxomately 3:08 pm, we were dispatched to a residential 1st alarm on Oak Grove in Wellston. First arriving units found a medium two-story residence with heavy fire on the Charlie side, with a vehicle fully involved as well as a detached garage that was beginning to ignite. 4502 struck a 2nd alarm upon completing a 360-degree assessment, as high winds and dry conditions had enabled the fire to quickly spread to three other exposure buildings. Units on scene worked quickly to contain the fires, but ultimately, a 4th alarm was requested to extinguish and contain multiple structure fires, brush/grass fires, and provide exposure protection on Ogden, Rockbrooks, Wellsmar, and Myrtle. Mid County would like to thank all of our mutual aid partners for their excellent teamwork and aggressive efforts that finally extinguished everything and kept damage as limited as possible, as well as all of our move-up companies who filled in for all of the on-scene crews!!
