The Kentucky Center for School Safety (KCSS) is excited to announce that the theme for Kentucky Safe Schools Week, September 14-18, is "Strong Roots. Safe Schools". This year's theme highlights the need for ongoing vigilance and proactive steps to keep our schools safe and secure across the Commonwealth.

This week focuses on helping schools strengthen their safety initiatives through targeted activities and discussions. The goal is to raise awareness of various aspects of school safety and empower students, teachers, parents, guardians, and the wider community to take proactive steps to create a safe and nurturing learning environment for everyone.

➡️ You can help us by completing the KY Safe Schools Week pledge and watching the KCSS state pledge data map to check our district's data: https://kycss.org/safe-schools-week/safety-week-pledge/

Paducah Tilghman High School senior Caroline Adkins has achieved the distinction of National Merit Semifinalist in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Caroline is one of approximately 16,000 semifinalists from 1.2 million juniors who entered the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). The nationwide pool of approximately 16,000 semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.

From the approximately 16,000 semifinalists, about 15,000 are expected to advance to the finalist level. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $24 million that will be offered next spring. In addition, semifinalists and finalists are eligible for numerous full and partial scholarships from various public and private universities.

Caroline is an AP Scholar with Distinction, AP Rural and Small Town Scholar, and recipient of the AP Top School Recognition Award. She’s an alumna of the Kentucky Governor’s Scholar Program, a graduate of the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce Youth LEAD Class #15, and is currently a Paducah Rotary Student of the Month. She’s placed and won numerous awards at both the State and National levels for National History Day competition the last five years, most recently receiving the George Washington Leadership In History Award at the national competition. She has garnered Tilghman’s annual departmental top student awards in Math, English, Social Studies, and Science every year.

Caroline is a four-year member of the Tilghman Varsity Soccer Team and was selected for Academic All-State the past three years. She is President of the National Honor Society, is a PTHS Student Ambassador, and a member of Beta Club, PT Pageturners, and the Tilghman Concert Choir. The past two years she has been selected for the Kentucky Music Educators Association All-State Choir.

She volunteers extensively in Children’s Ministry and technology at her church and has engaged in more than sixty hours of additional volunteer and community service, including as a Summer Mercy Health Volunteer in the Cancer Center and Gift Shop.

She is the daughter of Ashley and Bill Adkins of Paducah.

“Caroline has a stellar academic record and an outstanding commitment to service in our community. It’s not surprising that she has earned the honor of National Merit Semifinalist,” said Tilghman Principal Deatrik Kinney. “Paducah Tilghman is very proud of her achievement and we look forward to watching her continue down a path of success.”
