On behalf of the Paducah Senior Center, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Meals on Wheels America for generously awarding us a $10,000 grant. With rising food and gas prices heavily impacting our daily operations, this additional funding is incredibly timely and deeply appreciated. These vital resources will directly support our mission, ensuring we can continue delivering nutritious meals and warm smiles to our community's homebound seniors.

We appreciate their steadfast partnership and for helping us keep our wheels turning for those who need it most.

Attending the National Council on Aging (NCOA) Age+Action Conference for the past three years has been an incredibly inspiring journey, bringing together passionate senior center professionals from every corner of the country to collaborate and share innovative ideas to bring home to Paducah.

A powerful highlight of this experience has been the opportunity to advocate directly on Capitol Hill, speaking with legislators about the critical need for the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act. This vital legislation provides the essential funding that supports life-changing aging services back home, ensuring our seniors continue to thrive with dignity and independence. We were able to share our concerns for our community, when essential services have waiting lists and funding is often in jeopardy.

It is a truly remarkable opportunity for us to be able to attend this week, allowing us to gather fresh inspiration and bring impactful strategies back to our community!

Senior Center Members:

We will continue to be closed for in-person services at the center next week, June 1-5. While progress is being made on the engineering and electrical plans and permitting, we still have to wait for everything to be finalized and approved. This is a process, and with all the people involved, it will not happen as quickly as we would love for it to. Look for some more updates early next week regarding our phases of reopening plan.

Please remember that we could not continue offering services at the former location; we had to make this move sooner than planned. We know this is an unfortunate situation, and we would appreciate your patience and understanding. These decisions are not made lightly.

Thank you!

*If you're a senior or know a senior needing items from Walt's Closet, please give the office a call to set up a delivery/pickup.

The process begins with a detailed application and includes extensive preparation by nonprofit agencies, including financial documentation, program information, and independent third-party financial reviews or audits based on organizational budget size.

THANK YOU to the dedicated volunteer panel and each incredible agency that we serve. We look forward to an impactful year across the region!

💥Impact Story💥
During a recent delivery route, a Meals on Wheels driver arrived at a client's home only to discover that the senior had suffered a fall. The driver could see her on the floor, unable to get up, through the door, but the locked entrance prevented direct access to help her. Acting quickly, the driver immediately called 911 and stayed on the scene until emergency responders arrived to gain entry and safely transport her to the hospital.

This incident serves as a powerful reminder that the Meals on Wheels program is truly more than a meal; it is a vital daily wellness check and a lifeline that keeps vulnerable seniors safe. We appreciate our driver, BJ, for being quick to act in this situation, which truly made a difference❤️

At the beginning of the year, when Shirley came to me about leaving in late May due to her health, we really had no idea that we would be in the middle of this transition. Because our center is currently closed, we will have a luncheon offsite on May 29th and encourage those who are able to come to join us. The flyer below includes details and how to register. We have reserved the back room, but would like to give the restaurant an idea of how many to expect.

I have also included below a note from Shirley that was featured in our May newsletter. We appreciate everything she has done for the Senior Center, and we ask that you join us in praying for her as she spends time to focus on her health and enjoys time with family. We wish her all the best🩷

Our seniors are the heartbeat of this community-they're our retired teachers, our veterans, our grandparents, and the keepers of our local history. For decades, the nonprofit Paducah Senior Center(not a nursing home) has been their safe haven, a place for warm meals, vibrant activities, health/wellness, and lifelong friendships. Meal programs alone providing almost 60,000 meals last year to seniors in this community. Our former facility has been good to us over the years, but the functionable space that we were able to use no longer met our needs.

Right now, that haven is undergoing a massive renovation and transition. We've made the plans, knocking down the old, and mapped out a beautiful new to us modern space where our seniors can thrive. But to officially 100% open the doors and complete this transformation, we need the support of our community. While we are thankful for the handful of individual donors, grants, and McCracken County Fiscal Court for their financial support for this project, we will need more to make this happen.

How YOU can help us cross the Finish Line:
-Donate: Every single dollar goes directly toward the materials and furnishings for this project. No amount is too small to make a difference.
-Spread the Word: Share this post! Let's get the word out to every corner of McCracken County.

"A society is measured by how it treats its elders." Let's show everyone what Paducah is made of. Our seniors have spent a lifetime supporting our community-now it's our turn to show up for them through this project!
