Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! 🥳 Today, we are highlighting the life of Miya Sannomiya Kikuchi. 🇯🇵🇺🇸

Miya was a leader in many ways. Like many other children of immigrants, she had to navigate living in two worlds while not fitting into either. Her time with the YWCA, and especially her time at Asilomar, showed her what it’s like to live in true equality with people from different backgrounds. That experience helped her become a cultural ambassador, advocating for unity and understanding across racial and cultural divides.

Sea slugs are spectacular tidepool treasures—and we need your help finding them! 🔍 Join staff from California State Parks and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife on Saturday, May 23 from 10-1 to share your sea slug observations during the first-ever Sea Slug Search. This is part of the summer Snapshot Cal Coast campaigns run by the Center for Biodiversity and Community Science at the Cal Academy. Use iNaturalist to help fill data gaps and deepen our understanding of sea slug diversity! 🥳

Sea slugs are colorful, diverse, and often overlooked indicators of intertidal ecosystem health. By bringing together community scientists, researchers, and tidepoolers to document nudibranchs along the California coast, we can create a powerful snapshot of sea slug diversity, abundance, and distribution that can be used to track change over time. 💪

Happy ! Let’s go on an adventure in the tidepools! 🌊

There is so much to see and appreciate when the tides are low! These were our findings during the most recent set of King Tides. 🦀 When observing these intertidal creatures in their element, be gentle when touching them and watch out for any waves that may be rushing in. 👀

Asilomar State Beach and its adjacent marine protected area mean there is extra protection and regulations for these creatures. Remember to leave anything cool you see behind, so others can enjoy finding them too! 🙌

If you are interested in learning more about tidepools, join us for a sea slug scavenger hunt on Saturday, May 23rd! California State Parks staff and volunteers will be on the main beach from 10 AM-1 PM to help visitors find tidepool life. 🫧

Happy ! How did you do?

The marine mammals of Monterey Bay are special and play important roles in the ocean’s health, serving as predators and prey. 🦦🦭 As cute and cuddly as they may appear, marine mammals are protected by law, and approaching or touching them can cause unpredictable reactions.

In addition, H5N1 bird flu has been confirmed in seabirds and northern elephant seal pups. While the risk to the general public remains very low and there is no evidence of seal‑to‑human transmission, please avoid contact with sick or dead wildlife, including dead birds, to limit the potential transmission of bird flu to humans.

If you see a marine mammal that looks sick, injured, or abandoned, remember to keep your distance! ✋Please call the Marine Mammal Center at (415) 289-7325 to ensure that professional, trained responders can assess the situation and take action.📞

The spring season is in full swing at Asilomar, and that means wildflowers galore! 🤩🌸

Many native plants bloom in the spring and summer. Take a stroll down our dunes boardwalk to view them, or join us for a guided wildflower walk! Walks meet at the Social Hall at 3:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

Remember to stay on trail to avoid trampling plants, and take only photographs so future visitors can enjoy them too!
