πŸ‰βš”οΈπŸ›‘Hazzah! The Festival of Courage is coming to MBCS! 🍁 As autumn arrives, our community gathers for one of the special seasonal traditions of Waldorf education: the Festival of Courage.

This celebration invites us to consider what it means to meet life’s challenges with courage, wisdom, and the support of community. Our β€œdragonsβ€πŸ² can take many forms, both the challenges we encounter in the world and the difficult feelings that can shake our sense of balance.

Rather than simply fighting our dragons, we can learn to meet them with courage, understand their energy, and transform challenges into opportunities for growth.

Our annual celebration brings this theme to life through a Courage Play presented by all the grades, along with a Courage Course where younger children can test their bravery through a series of challenges and activities. Upper grades will also host curriculum-based booths for younger students to explore.

Families are an important part of this beloved tradition, helping bring the festival to life through costumes, dragon bread, and class booth support.

We warmly invite our MBCS community to gather with us as we celebrate courage, friendship, and the strength we discover when we face our dragons together.

🌎✨ Fifth grade is a time when the world begins to open wider. Students explore ancient cultures, geography, mathematics, botany, and the natural sciences while developing greater independence in their academic work.

In Waldorf education, these subjects are approached through story, observation, artistic expression, movement, research, and direct experience. A study of geography might become a carefully drawn map, while history comes alive through the stories and mythology of ancient civilizations.

At MBCS, academic learning continues to grow in depth and complexity while remaining connected to the child's sense of wonder and creativity. Fifth grade invites students to look outward at the world while beginning to think more deeply about their own place within it. πŸŒΏπŸ“šβœ¨

🧸πŸͺπŸ€Έβ€β™‚️πŸͺ†πŸ‘‘ Through play, children create the world anew each day and try on every imaginable situation within it. They build houses and ships, rockets, and fire engines. They explore life in homes and farms, forests and mountains, underwater and in outer space. All of this is initiated by the children, with occasional help from a trusted adult. They create their play worlds using the simplest of materials, such as logs and stumps, stones, shells, and cloth.

In the course of play, their growth in all areas is stimulated – physically, emotionally, socially, mentally, and spiritually. As has been confirmed by a growing body of research, such open-ended imaginative play that comes out of the child’s inner life and capacities lays a foundation for imaginative and lively thinking in adolescence and adulthood.πŸ’ It also stimulates interest in all aspects of life, which can then be cultivated through academic studies in the elementary grades and beyond.

Our kindergarten classes take a play-based approach. Music, games and finger play develop rhythm and counting skills. The hands-on activities of gardening, cooking, nature walks, seasonal activities, etc., introduce science, math and geography skills, concepts and vocabulary. Multicultural stories give the child an introduction to social studies.

Fourth grade marks an important step in a child's journey through the grades. As students become more aware of themselves and the world around them, their studies begin to expand in new directions.

At MBCS, geography, history, mathematics, language arts, science, and the arts are woven together through stories, observation, artistic work, and direct experience. Students are encouraged to look closely, ask questions, make connections, and gradually take greater ownership of their learning.

This is part of the Waldorf approach to educating the whole child: meeting children where they are developmentally while nurturing the curiosity, creativity, and confidence that will carry them into the years ahead. πŸŒΏπŸ“š

🐞🌞πŸͺ In Waldorf education, the rhythms of the natural world are woven into the life of the classroom. Seasonal artwork, stories, and traditions help children build a deeper connection to the world around them.

As we prepare to welcome a new school year, these changing seasonal rhythms gently guide us into a fresh beginning filled with wonder, discovery, and joyful learning. 🌿

🌾✨ What makes a Waldorf third grade different? Third grade is a year of discovery, responsibility, and growing independence. As children begin to explore their place in the wider world, Waldorf education offers meaningful experiences that help them build confidence through real work.

Students learn by gardening, baking, building, creating, researching, and exploring how people live in different places and cultures. Alongside continued growth in reading, writing, and mathematics, these hands-on experiences encourage curiosity, perseverance, and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

At MBCS, we believe children learn best when they can experience ideas with their whole being. By engaging the head, heart, and hands, third grade lays a strong foundation for both academic learning and personal growth. 🌱

Play should be elevated as part of the learning process. Movement and language can be interwoven by combining jumping and skipping with rhymes and songs. Developing motor and language skills work in symbiosis for a holistic learning experience. πŸ§ΆπŸ§ΈπŸšπŸ›Ό
