I am proud of us, Pacific Grove Public Library, Pacific Grove Public Library Friends and Foundation, artists, presenters and performers for exploring and celebrating the Harlem Renaissance and the social and cultural changes it ushered in. We did this in 2022. Here is a current exhibit on the Harlem Renaissance that was featured on NBC Nightly News this evening:

Nearly a century since the Harlem Renaissance began, a new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is celebrating the arts and culture boom from Black artists. NBC News' Al Roker has the story.

This has been heart and mind expanding series, thanks to all the artists, poets, musicians and community groups who participated. The presentations have concluded, but the art exhibit in the gallery will be on view until January 5, 2024. You can still spend some time with those thought provoking images and words.

Not only do we get to hear the first Youth Poet Laureate of Monterey County, Mahi Shah, and the wonderful Malinda DeRouen and Paul DeRouen, we also get to hear the Palenke Arts Bilingual Youth Chorus. This Friday, Dec. 15 at 5:30. "America Singing".

Local Singer and Actress Malinda DeRouen and Youth Laureate Mahi Shah with Palenke Arts Present “America Singing” Friday, December 15th at 5:30pm.

The exhibition “Ourselves We Sing: A call and response with Walt Whitman” with series of special events will close January 5th. This performance is the finale of a series of five featuring ethnically diverse poetic responses, special installations and advocacy tables.

Youth Laureate Mahi Shah's poetry performance will include a debut poem. Local Singer and Actress Malinda DeRouen's vocal performance will be accompanied by brother Paul DeRouen. The Palenke Arts Bilingual Chorus will join them for this finale event of the "Ourselves We Sing" series and fine art exhibition.

Malinda DeRouen is a local singer, actress, narrator and chorus instructor at Palenke Arts.

Mahi Shah, a student of Hartnell College and Notre Dame High School, was selected as the Inaugural Monterey County Youth Poet Laureate.
