Family Matters of Greater Washington Creating brighter futures for all ages for over 135 years We are one of the oldest, nationally accredited social service organizations in the DC Metro area.

Founded in 1882, Family Matters has been an integral part of the Washington, DC community for more than 135 years. Additionally, we are accredited by the Council on Accreditation Services for Families and Children, Inc. and approved as a freestanding mental health clinic by the District of Columbia. In addition, we are also members of the Child Welfare League of America, the Consortium for Child Welfare, the DC Behavioral Health Association, and the United Way of the National Capital Area.

Family Matters is dedicated to giving individuals and families the tools and resources they need to be healthy, independent and stable. We currently serve more than 2,000 area residents each year. Our programs and services include:

Child Welfare Unit assists approximately 75+ children per year who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. Our Bright Futures residential program helps to shape 14 teenage mothers at a time, into skilled, independent adults while actively caring for their children. The Mental Health Unit assists approximately 450 people per year struggling with emotional or psychological disturbances. At Camp Moss Hollow, children and youth from diverse backgrounds and economic situations experience nature at our beautiful 400 acre camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Senior Social Services assists 600+ older adults per year, through a broad range of services that include case management and counseling; and our Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and Senior Works Program encourages 2,000+ seniors per year, to stay active by using their life experiences to serve their communities. Our Ways to Work program provides 80-100 small car loans per year to hard working families who cannot get a loan elsewhere.

Family Matters of Greater Washington, formerly Family and Child Services of Washington D.C., Inc., is the area’s oldest, nationally accredited, non-profit, social services organization. Each year Family Matters provides critical assistance to 10,000 area residents by strengthening troubled families, caring for at risk children and protecting vulnerable seniors. Throughout our history we have been responsible for bringing the Washington, D.C. area a number of cutting-edge programs such as the first District of Columbia Boy’s Club (1901); the first summer camp for African-American mothers and children (1907); the first daycare program for children of working parents (WWII); the first foster homes (1963); the city’s first multi-services senior center (1969); and the first weekend respite program for Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers (1986).
