ADVISORY COUNCIL: Made up of many volunteers that have a vast knowledge of Oxford history. They communicate with Oxford Historical Society's Board, through email, to help fill in the gaps of items that are donated that lack historical referencing.

EDIT. the owner has been located. Thank you to all who helped locate our prom goers.

This last weekend we had a few different groups who had their prom pictures taken at the museum, which is a wonderful location for unique photographs. However, there was a young man in a white tux with dark hair and the young lady had blonde hair and wore a white or silver dress that left behind a blanket where they sat on the steps by the front door. I have left it on the bench for you to come and pick up. Hope your photos came out well and that you had an enjoyable evening.

Please share so we can locate the family that left their personal belongings behind.

It was our pleasure tonight to host the Oxford Lions at the Museum. They held their monthly meeting and I gave a brief presentation on our accomplishments over the last couple years and our future goals. Fun evening was had by all. Thank you Lions for asking us to share our goals and mission with you.

We have many projects going on right now as we prepare for our open season. This progress only happens with the efforts of many volunteers. Restoration of the Watchman’s Shanty, by Bill Kelsey, is coming along nicely. The windows have been reinstalled and Bill was able to preserve almost all the original wood, as he works on keeping its historical appearance.

Do you have on your red and black today?

On April 30, 1896 it was voted on unanimously by the Hellenic Athletic Association of Oxford Academy that red and black would be our school colors. Wear it with pride today!!!

Such a fun day at the museum today, lots of commotion and so much fun!!! We had 5 visitors (2 were from out of state) popping in to check out our displays. Then volunteers, Dennis Carey & Sally Nuzzolese, stopped in as they work on some of our current projects. Bill Kelsey also was out there continually working on the Watchman’s Shanty.

Enjoyed having a fun group of the Finch family stop in as shown in the group photo: Tom Finch, Gary & Sharon Finch Carpenter, Connie Finch McGowan. Tom was in from Las Vegas. Being back in the building stirred up fond memories for him of being in the depot as a young boy.

Another visitor was Ann Storer from Massachusetts with strong family roots to Oxford by way of the Ruth Tracy Mowry family. She has offered us multiple documents, photos, and postcards of Oxford and continually supports our mission.

All visitors, volunteers, and all those who support our vision of preserving and displaying our Oxford’s history are so appreciated. Your support helps us and motivates us to continue to work toward having a quality museum. Thank you all.

SPRING CLEANING
GETTING READY FOR OPENING DAY
MAY 2ND FROM 10:00-12:00

Monday was spent cleaning the Oxford Historical Society Museum, getting ready for Opening Day. Windows were washed, floors were mopped, every artifact was dusted, and even though there was snow on the ground, the lawn around the museum was raked and debris picked up. All of this was the result of some hard work by Dennis Carey, Gray Stevens, and Rich Howard. They worked non-stop all morning and it was greatly appreciated. We hope you plan on stopping in soon to visit our collection of Oxford artifacts. Open every Saturday, starting May 2nd, from 10:00 to 12:00.

Have you driven down Merchant Street lately? The Watchman’s Shanty, by the tracks, is getting a facelift. The Oxford Historical Society has contracted Bill Kelsey Sr. to restore the structure back to its glory, preserving its historical integrity as much as possible. Just another step forward that the Oxford Historical Society is taking to protect our Oxford heritage. If you see Bill, thank him for his efforts in making our vision become a reality.

REQUESTING YOUR HELP
Streets & Homes

OUR PROJECT - We are undertaking a huge project and would love your help. Recently, there have been many requests for info on individual homes. We have at least three sources of info on most properties within the Village, but they are in rough shape and at times conflict each other with facts listed. So it is time to digitize ALL files into a form that is user friendly and setup a source that is accessible for our visitors to view.

OUR NEED - Info about all houses (old homes or more recent builds, all are included) whether you currently live there or did live there. Listed below are a few things we are looking for.
1. When was it built, who built it, type of construction
2. Any addition and when added or areas removed like porches, fireplaces, etc.
3. Special structural aspects: # and type of staircases, # fireplaces, pocket doors, stained glass windows, widow cupola, turrets, carriage houses, sheds, etc.
4. Current and previous owners and year they bought it
5. Photos, old or recent. Include year if known.
6. Home still there? (burned, razed and if so when)

HOW YOU CAN HELP - Please do NOT enter info requested into the message area below. We will be printing out each person's submitted info, and entering into our new format. Please EMAIL or MAIL info to us. Another option is reach out to me, and set up a time to stop in to drop off your info.
