It is Preservation Friday news time again! Way back on Saturday, September 13, a group of 12 Miami University students volunteered during the annual Redhawks Day of Service through Wilks Institute for Leadership and Service. The group carefully cleaned headstones in the Pioneer section of Woodside Cemetery on Chestnut Street. We are grateful for their community service in helping make these grave markers legible!

Preservation Friday treasure hunt time! The pictured building was erected in the 1860s as a two-story, Italian Villa styled, home. During the following century, it would house families of an apothecary, a tailor, a merchant, an attorney, and a banker before being converted to its current state.
Where is this building and what is used for now? We admit this one might be a little harder than some of the previous ones, because the tower was removed and the brick is now painted. See if you can find it hiding in Oxford and share any thoughts and memories you have! Come to the Oxford Municipal Building, 8-5, M-F, to retrieve a collectible preservation sticker in our lobby!

Preservation Friday!
This building was constructed in the 1950’s, and for almost three decades it was the location of a popular Dairy Queen. In the 80’s, the space was occupied by a laundromat, a clothing store, and then a restaurant before it was incorporated into a larger adjacent building.
Where is this location and what is there now? If you know any other history about this space, let us know! We have free, collectable preservation stickers waiting for you at the Oxford Municipal Building!

Preservation Friday No. 4! This Greek Revival style brick house was built in the late 1830s and housed multiple different families until 1990. Different additions were built in that time to house a gas station office and a funeral parlor. This historical home can be found looking similar today.
Where do you think it is and what purpose does it serve to Oxford now? Let us know the address and any personal connections you might have with this location! We look forward to seeing you at the Municipal Building where you can collect a preservation sticker!

Preservation Friday No. 3! This one might be a little harder than the first two?

This commercial building was built around the 1920s and businesses here included a barbershop, a dry-cleaning establishment, and shoe repair shop. What is it now and where can you find it? If you know, share it here and tell us some more history! If you happen to know the date of the photograph and the significance of the bikers, let us know.
Come to the Municipal Building to get a preservation sticker and add it to your collection!

Preservation Friday No. 2!

This two-story brick house was primarily used as a doctor’s office from 1864 to1931. Built in the 1840’s, it is believed that the house was a stop on the Underground Railroad.

Preservation Friday! This is the first of weekly posts about Oxford History. This is part of a broader effort by our community and the Historic & Architectural Preservation Commission, to raise awareness about the history of our built environment.

The pictured building was originally built as livery stable in 1900, which housed the Oxford Hardware Company from 1909 to 1984. Although the exterior doesn’t look quite the same, this modern-day shop has maintained it’s architecture in the arched windows and stepped-gable facade.
Oxford, we want YOU to tell us where this historic building is and what it is now! Share some memories you have in the comments and come to the Oxford Municipal Building, 8-5, M-F, to retrieve a collectible preservation sticker in our lobby!
