Let's help make the Mother's Day REDO in Orion Twp. a big success! Head south between June 14 and June 20 to do a little shopping or grab a bite or both. Our neighbors need a hand.

Whenever Oxford has faced difficult situations, Orion has been there for us, offering whatever is needed. Let's return the favor and help Orion's businesses recoup some of the sales they lost on Mother's Day due to the water main break. Remember, we're stronger together and good neighbors are forever!

When a water main break forced Orion Township into a State of Emergency on Mother's Day, the impact extended far beyond our water system. Many local businesses lost out on one of the busiest shopping and dining days of the year as celebrations were canceled, postponed, or moved elsewhere.

On Mother's Day and in the days that followed, many restaurants, stores, and other businesses temporarily closed or reduced services, sacrificing revenue to help preserve and restore our water supply for the good of the community.

Now it's our turn to show up for them.

Orion, it's time for a REDO:

Retail.
Experience.
Dine.
Orion.

Orion Township, Downtown Lake Orion, Orion Area Chamber of Commerce, and The Illuminators are declaring June 14 a Mother's Day Do-Over and encouraging residents to shop, dine, and explore local that day and throughout the week that follows. Together, we can help restore some of the sales, visits, and opportunities local businesses missed when one of their brightest days of the year was unexpectedly dimmed.

Whether it's rebooking a brunch, buying a gift, scheduling an experience, or simply choosing to spend local, every visit makes a difference.

The water emergency may be behind us, but our Orion spirit continues to illuminate what makes this community special; we love, support, and show up for the people and places that make Orion home.💚 ✨

P.S. Show us your REDO! Share a photo of yourself, your friends, or your family supporting local businesses using for a chance to win gift cards and other prizes.

Celebrating Oxford's 1st woman physician!
You are cordially invited to the Monday, June 29 unveiling ceremony for the township historical marker honoring Dr. Aileen Betteys Corbit, Oxford’s first woman physician. The 11 a.m. ceremony will take place at 111 S. Washington St. (Whimsy Art Studio).

Born in Oxford in October 1877, Dr. Aileen Betteys Corbit graduated from Oxford High School in 1893 and received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Michigan in 1902. She was among a very small group of women to earn a medical degree from U-M that year. In addition to her practice, Dr. Corbit served as Oxford Village’s health officer in the 1920s and 1930s. A descendant of three Revolutionary War veterans, Dr. Corbit was the driving force behind the creation of the John Crawford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in 1918.

Oxford Twp. Parks and Recreation's hard-working maintenance crew spent Wednesday morning sawing, chiseling, and drilling to prepare the boulder that will bear a 16x20 bronze plaque sharing Dr. Corbit's story. A sincere "thank you" to them!

The plaque was funded by a grant from the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) Foundation and donations from the John Crawford Chapter, NSDAR, and Stephens Family Law. The Edward C. Levy Co. donated the beautiful boulder on which the plaque will be mounted.

Immediately following the unveiling of the Dr. Corbit marker, Whimsy Art Studio has graciously offered to provide refreshments (coffee from CFE Roasters and pastries) and tours of the 111 S. Washington St. house, which served as Dr. Corbit's residence and office.

The Dr. Corbit marker is part of a larger historical marker program launched in January 2025. Created and administered by C.J. Carnacchio, the township’s communications and grants manager, the program – which is being funded with donations and grants – highlights people, places, structures and events that are significant in terms of Oxford history. Historical markers will be placed throughout the 36-square-mile township. Four markers were placed in 2025. An additional nine markers will be erected in 2026.

Each marker consists of a boulder with a 16-inch x 20-inch bronze plaque mounted on it. Each plaque contains one or two images (taken from vintage photos) and a historical narrative. Later this year, a QR code will be placed on the plaques. The code will be linked to a webpage containing historical information and a marker map.

All the boulders are being donated by Oxford’s two gravel mining companies – Edward C. Levy Co. and Koenig Materials. Saradan Construction is donating its manpower and equipment to move the boulders from the mining sites to the marker sites. Oxford Township Parks & Recreation is installing the plaques. It’s a true community effort! Thank you, everyone!

More boulders placed, more history coming!
Bravo to Saradan Construction for donating its labor, equipment and expertise to place four big, beautiful boulders throughout Oxford on Tuesday, June 9 as part of the township’s historical marker program. All of the boulders were graciously donated by the Edward C. Levy Co. and Koenig Materials. The ongoing commitment to Oxford demonstrated by these three companies is invaluable and inspiring.

Boulders – on which 16x20 bronze plaques containing historical narratives and photographs will be mounted – were placed at the following locations:

• Mt. Pleasant Cemetery – This marker will honor Seth Francis (1837-1930), the prosperous Oxford farmer and businessman who served in the American Civil War. He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg and endured confinement in three of the Confederacy’s most infamous military prisons. “(Seth Francis) is a typical self-made man, having had no one to start him in life, but having been obliged to make his way in the world the best he could. – Portrait and Biographical Album of Oakland County, Michigan (1891).

• Thomas United Methodist Church – This marker will celebrate the history of the unincorporated Village of Thomas, which was platted in December 1873 by John Thomas. The arrival of the Detroit & Bay City Railroad line spawned Thomas. The village was once the biggest shipping center for agricultural products between Detroit and Bay City. Up to 54 railroad cars were leaving on a weekly basis. Thomas was ravaged by “The Great Cyclone of 1896,” an F5 tornado that carved a path of death and destruction through north Oakland County on May 25, 1896. It’s the second deadliest tornado in Michigan history.

• Rattlewood Farms – This marker will honor U.S. Army Major Robert J. Borg (1913-2005), the legendary Olympic coach and competitor who co-founded RedBob Farms in the mid-1950s. An accident in October 1959 cost Borg, a World War II veteran, the use of his legs. But he didn’t let his loss of mobility stop him from pursuing his passion. He invented a device dubbed “the round table” that enabled him to continue working with horses. Borg, who was inducted into U.S. Dressage Federation Hall of Fame in 2003, schooled more than 600 horses at RedBob Farms and taught countless riders.

• Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ – This marker will celebrate the fact that Immanuel Congregational is Oxford’s oldest church building in continuous use. Dedicated in 1879, the church building was designed by Detroit-based architect Charles H. Marsh, according to an April 1878 Detroit Free Press article. Marsh, who came from Rochester, New York, also designed the Universalist Church of Our Father (1881-1913) in Detroit’s Grand Circus Park and the Firemen’s Monument in Detroit’s Elmwood Cemetery. Immanuel Congregational’s iconic tower contains a 44-inch-diameter Blymyer bell that was cast in Cincinnati, Ohio and still functions thanks to a 2023 restoration. Blymyer bells were produced from the 1860s through the 1920s.

The plaques honoring Seth Francis, Major Robert J. Borg and the Village of Thomas were funded by a $15,646 America250MI grant awarded to the township by the State of Michigan along with $2,421 in matching funds donated by the Northeast Oakland Historical Society and Museum. The John Crawford Chapter, National Daughters of the American Revolution and American Legion Walter Fraser Post 108 have also partnered with the township on these three historical markers.

The plaque celebrating Immanuel Congregational UCC’s building was funded by the church’s membership.

A total of nine township historical markers will be erected in 2026.

Faded but not forgotten . . .
Be sure to attend the Stars & Stripes Community Flag Retirement Ceremony at Oxford Fire Station #1 (96 N. Washington St.) on Saturday, June 13 from 1 to 4 p.m. Scouts from Troop 108 and Troop 186 will be participating in the event, which is sponsored by Fr. Thomas R. Carey Knights of Columbus Council 4764.

"This isn't just a ceremony – it's an immersive patriotic experience for the whole family! Join us as we honor our history, teach the next generation respect for our 'Grand Old Flag' and gather together in unity," said Oxford Village Councilwoman Regina Nock, the event organizer.

American flags that have been deemed “unserviceable" – worn, faded, torn, soiled, tattered or otherwise damaged beyond repair – will be respectfully retired by burning during the ceremony. According to the U.S. Flag Code, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

Residents who wish to properly dispose of their worn or damaged American flags are invited to place them in a special collection box at the Oxford Township Hall.

The Stars & Stripes Community Flag Retirement Ceremony is part of Oxford Village’s America 250/Oxford 150 efforts.

Located at 300 Dunlap Rd., the Oxford Township Hall is open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Photos by C.J. Carnacchio.
