Member Line of Duty Death: Master Trooper Steven J. Perry

Dear Patrol Family,

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of one of our own. Master Trooper Steven J. Perry has passed away from an on-duty traffic collision while working in Durham County. Initial indications are that early this morning he was struck head-on by a wrong-way driver while traveling on NC-147. The other involved driver is also deceased from the traffic collision.

Trooper Perry was a member of the 148th Basic Patrol School and has served Durham County throughout his nearly 7-year career. During this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and fellow troopers who had the privilege of serving alongside him. We ask that you keep the entirety of his family and our Patrol Family in your thoughts.

We would like to thank the Durham County Emergency Medical Services, Durham Fire Department, Durham Police Department and the North Carolina Department of Transportation IMAP Division for their extensive assistance at the scene of this crash.

As further details become available and as a celebration of life service is planned, we will ensure that details are shared.

Please stay safe, take care of one another and keep the family in your prayers.

Warmest Regards,
Colonel Freddy Johnson Jr.

Today we remember the legacy of Chief Ned Baird. Chief Baird left us 9 years ago today. But his legacy, hard work and dedication to building a solid foundation for Berea Fire Department will live on. Chief was an exceptional community leader, church member and fire department Chief in which he gave 100% dedication to every day. We thank you for your service to the community and hope that you will continue to watch over us on every call.

Berea Fire Dept. would like to announce that we have received our inspection from NC OSFM. This inspection reflects the hard work and dedication that our members give each and every day. They have put in many hours to achieve this accomplishment. The department could not do this without the support of our wonderful community, Board of Directors and Ladies Auxiliary. We are excited to announce that we received a rating of 5/9E which is an improvement from the last rating which was five year earlier in which we had a 6/9E. Again, this improvement is a great accomplishment for the department and members. We will continue to improve and strive to protect the community we love each day.

I would like to thank all of our volunteers for their hard work and dedication that they give each and every day. These individuals drop everything they are doing and respond to calls for assistance. Tonight Berea FD responded mutual aid to assist Providence, Corinth and Oxford FD with a working structure fire. After they had cleared and returned home, Berea FD responded to a working structure fire in our district with assistance from Cornwall, Granville Rural and Providence FD. It was a cold evening and night, but all of our volunteers showed up and performed their duties. We would like to thank all mutual aid departments for assisting with trucks, manpower and equipment.

To everyone in our district, please try to stay home and off the roads. Be mindful of burning heaters and candles around other objects. Stay safe and please pray for the safety of our volunteers as they answer the calls for assistance.
