It’s a beautiful Saturday in Oxford. In addition to responding to emergency calls, both on- and off-duty personnel are actively supporting several community events taking place today.

Unit 3 personnel are participating in the Fresh Air Fair at Talawanda High School. An EMT and paramedic team are providing standby coverage for the Miami 20/20 Bike Race at Chestnut Fields, while another crew of paramedics is on-site for the Miami University MAC tennis match.

We are grateful for the continued support of our community and our strong partnership with Miami University.

Between rain storms today, on-duty crews went back to the basics for some ladder drills. 589’ of total ladder thrown; not a bad Saturday. We even got the old 50’ wooden Bangor ladder out. Unfortunately the 72-year old halyard finally gave in.

Last week six members of OFD attended a three-day training led by Dive Rescue International - Public Safety to become DRI ice rescue instructors. Instructor Mike Janes led students though the legal, administrative, instructional, and practical skills required. Unfortunately the warm weather melted all the ice, but after generous assistance from our community we were able to get time in a local hotel pool and local pond to simulate our rescues. Not that we want to see any ice anytime soon, we will be ready if needed! These six members (2 from each shift) will use their certifications to train the entire OFD in ice rescue techniques.
