What a week! Thank you, Owosso, for another great Curwood Festival.

We would like to recognize the members of the Owosso Police Department, Owosso Fire Department, and the many volunteers who assisted with the Heritage Parade on June 6. Their efforts helped ensure a safe and successful event for our community.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year's festival a success. We are already looking forward to next year as the Curwood Festival celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2027.

See you next year!

The Owosso Police Department is proud to recognize Officer Michael Olsey as the recipient of the Citation of Meritorious Service Award.

On May 2, 2026, Owosso Public Safety was dispatched to a residence on Hickory Street for a report of an unconscious person who had collapsed while mowing the lawn. Prior to Officer Olsey's arrival, two citizens immediately began CPR on Mr. Josh Fagan.

Officer Olsey arrived before EMS and found Mr. Fagan unresponsive. After assessing the patient and determining there was no pulse and agonal breathing was present, Officer Olsey took over life-saving measures and continued CPR until paramedics from the Owosso Fire Department arrived and provided advanced life support care. Mr. Fagan was then transported to the hospital for further treatment.

Officer Olsey's dedication did not end when the emergency call was over. The following day, he returned to the residence and finished mowing Mr. Fagan's lawn, demonstrating compassion, service, and commitment to the community beyond the call of duty.

For his actions, the City of Owosso awarded Officer Olsey the Citation of Meritorious Service Award on June 4, 2026.

Pictured are Josh Fagan and his wife, Tori, along with Officer Mike Olsey.

Please join us in congratulating Officer Olsey and recognizing the quick actions of the citizens, firefighters, paramedics, and everyone involved in Mr. Fagan's care.

Nice work, Mike!

Important information from the Curwood Festival, Inc.

It is with heavy hearts that we must announce the cancellation of the Kids in Curwood Country Parade 2026 due to weather conditions.

We know this news is incredibly disappointing. We share that disappointment, especially for the many children who were excited to participate and the families who were looking forward to celebrating this beloved Curwood tradition.

Unfortunately, we are also unable to move the parade to Sunday. The Curwood Festival is powered entirely by volunteers, and after careful consideration, we simply do not have the manpower needed to safely organize and operate the parade on an alternate day.

Our volunteers have already dedicated countless hours planning, organizing, and preparing for this event. They work tirelessly behind the scenes throughout the year and throughout festival weekend to make these traditions possible for our community. We are deeply grateful for their commitment, hard work, and love for Curwood.

While we are saddened that the parade cannot take place this year, the safety of our participants, spectators, and volunteers must come first.

Thank you for your understanding, your support, and for continuing to support the volunteers who make the Curwood Festival possible. ❤️🤍❤️

City flags at half-staff

"Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags across the state to be lowered to half-staff on Saturday, June 6, to honor and remember former U.S. Rep. Joe Schwarz.

“Michigan lost a leader and a hero, Dr. Joe Schwarz,” said Governor Whitmer. “Joe was not only a mentor but a friend. A proud Wolverine, he offered rivalry on game days and laughs on tough days. He led a life of service and embodied everything that makes our state so special. He was a reminder that we can sit on different sides of the aisle – and even cheer for opposing teams – yet still find common ground serving the people of Michigan. As a physician, a professor, and a representative, Joe led a life that put people first. My condolences go out to his family and loved ones."

Joe Schwarz graduated high school in Battle Creek before attending the University of Michigan where he earned his bachelor's degree. In 2007, Schwarz returned to the University of Michigan as a professor for the Ford School of Public Policy. Schwarz was also an experienced physician. He held a Doctor of Medicine from Wayne State University, which served him well as a Navy combat medic, chair of the 2008 embryonic stem cell ballot initiative, and through a lifelong career as an ear, nose, and throat doctor.

Schwarz embodied the best qualities of a public servant across mayorship in Battle Creek, 16 years as a state senator, and one term in Congress. His commitment to his constituents was always placed above his title as an elected official, often reaching across the aisle in the interest of public good.

As chair of the Senate Appropriations Higher Education Subcommittee, Schwarz fiercely advocated for public universities. He championed higher education and its ability to help individuals find new passions in tandem with economic stability.

The State of Michigan recognizes the duty, honor, and service of former U.S. Rep. Joe Schwarz by lowering flags to half-staff. "

Field Day + Fire Truck = One Awesome Last Day of School!

Yesterday, the Owosso Fire Department helped students at St. Paul Catholic School cool off during their annual Field Day. The firefighters brought a fire truck, turned on the water, and gave the kids a chance to run through the spray on a warm summer day.

Judging by the smiles, we'd say it was a success!

Have a safe and happy summer, St. Paul students! ☀️🚒💦
