Our debate with JSA is tomorrow! We will be debating Separation of Church and State, and it will start Part A lunch in MR NELSON'S ROOM. It may go into part B lunch. Please attend if you can; your support is appreciated even if you do not wish to speak during the debate. I have posted the opening arguments we created and I will be extending these arguments and printing out outlines of our main points and important information to know. Please do any research that you can on the issue so that you may be better prepared. Thank you!

Our opening arguments for the debate:
Church and State need to be distinct entities. The United States was founded upon ideals of religious freedom. Without this freedom, religious majorities could impose their will upon the masses, and religious minority groups would face violations of their civil liberties. The Constitution strictly prohibits the establishment of any religion. However, it is undeniable that America is a largely Christian nation. This blending of cultures is evidenced by public Christian displays such as Christmas decorations and the strong influence of religious media and groups. Despite this, Madison wrote that there must be a “great barrier” between Church and State. Contrary to popular opinion, many of these founding fathers were not Christian, but Deist. This country was not founded upon Christianity. More separation is ideal; the “under God” clause should be taken out of the Pledge of Allegiance, and religious activities should not be mandated for during political meetings.

Our debate with Northern's JSA will be on Friday, March 30 during lunch in Mr Nelson's room. We will have additional meetings to plan Monday A lunch in Mr Smith's room and Tuesday A lunch in Mrs. Novy's room for all who would like to attend.

We have been offered FREE "Proud Calvert County Democrat" T-shirts. The shirts are baby blue and on the front it reads: Democrats in small letters. On the back in large letters it reads: Another Proud Calvert County Democrat.

We have decided to decorate a Homecoming wall! Because of this, we will be having a meeting Wednesday A lunch to organize. IT WILL BE IN MS FRERE'S ROOM (306). Bring ideas! We would be decorating Friday Oct. 7th until about 6:00.

HEY ANYONE WORKING THE FAIR! I just got a call from the Democrats of Calvert County, and he asked for your cell phone numbers so that they can be sure you guys are let in (you shouldn't have to pay). He would like me to e-mail them to him as soon as possible, so if you could give it to me that'd be good. Also, they were wondering if there was anyone that's good with computers in our club that would be interested in helping them with their computer records.

HEY YOUNG DEMS!
On a whim, I talked to Jeff Phelps about getting ourselves T-shirts made (WE COULD WEAR THEM ON ELECTION DAY.) And Jeff informed me that we would save a lot of money on the shirts if we ordered them with the fall play t-shirts. Jeff is placing the order tomorrow, so If you want to a shirt, let me know. You don't have to have the money tomorrow, I just need to know what size! Thanks, -Kate McGowan
