STEM Camp Day 5: Today we welcomed a Physician Assistant specializing in orthopedic surgery who shared insights into his career, the education and training required to become a PA, and the important role he plays in helping patients recover from injuries. Students examined X-rays, explored anatomical models, and even participated in a live casting demonstration! A student volunteer received a temporary cast, everyone had the chance to sign it, then students watched as the cast was safely removed using the same specialized tools used in the office.

To end the day, we played some outdoor games and grilled some burgers!

A special thank you to our guest presenter, Adam Barnard, for sharing his time, expertise, and passion for orthopedics with our students!

Edit: Facebook has marked some these photos as sensitive content, but they are all rubber training dummies. I assure you they did not let our middle schoolers perform actual surgery! 😂

STEM Camp Day 4: Today students had an incredible opportunity to explore healthcare careers during a visit to HeathForce Kentucky!

Throughout the day, students participated in hands-on activities that introduced them to a variety of medical professions. In the immersive room, they learned about the important work of EMTs and how emergency responders care for patients in critical situations. In the sports medicine area, students used advanced 3D technology to examine muscles, bones, and body systems in ways that brought human anatomy to life.

Students also visited the medical laboratory to learn about the different tests and procedures used to help diagnose and treat patients. They practiced CPR with a respiratory therapist and gained a better understanding of how healthcare professionals respond during emergencies. One of the highlights of the day was the anatomy lab, where students stepped into the roles of surgeons and surgical technologists and experienced some of the skills used in operating rooms.

A HUGE thank you to the staff at HeathForce Kentucky for providing such an exciting and educational experience!

STEM Camp Day 3: students went behind the scenes and to learn how clean water makes its way from the underground aquifer to our homes and businesses.

Students toured the facility, explored the different stages of the water treatment process, and learned about the science and engineering that help provide safe drinking water for our community every day.

A special thank you to the staff and tour guides at the water treatment plant for welcoming our students. We appreciate the time you took to answer questions and share your knowledge!

STEM Camp Day 2- A small change of plans today since our guest had to reschedule. We played games in the morning, battled in an epic kickball game, then we made popcorn and turned iMiddle’s gym into a movie theater to watch “Spare Parts,” a movie about an underdog robotics team. Can’t wait to have our campers back tomorrow for our first field trip!

IMiddle’s STEM Camp is back in action! Today, students learned about emergency preparedness and communication from Mike Page with the Daviess County Emergency Management Agency.

Mr. Page introduced students to amateur (ham) radio operations, explained how radio operators become licensed, and shared how these communication tools are used during emergencies when other systems may be unavailable. Students even got hands-on experience using ham radios and practiced Morse code.

The highlight of the day was setting up a larger radio system outside and successfully making contact with an operator in Dallas, Texas!

We are grateful to Mike Page and the Daviess County Emergency Management Agency for sharing his time, expertise, and equipment with our students!
