FUGITIVE CAPTURED - Today, just minutes before noon, Reserve Officer Sumner called Lieutenant Worsham to report having just seen David Young, Age 50 walking down Old Big Cove Rd. near the Flint River Bridges. Young has been sought by Madison County authorities for a while. Officer Wilson had captured him a short while back but he had to be transported for a medical emergency taking place. Wilson had carried him out from behind some houses and trees to the ambulance over his shoulder. No one from law enforcement had seen him since.

Today, with Sumner's report, LT. Worsham hurried to Old Big Cove Rd. and saw Young in the 3100 block. When Worsham pulled up beside Young, he recognized LT. Worsham as someone he has interacted with several times through the years and was cooperative. Young simply asked "Y'all been looking for me haven't ya?" With that, Young was ready to give up and was cooperative. Sumner had returned and assisted with taking him into custody. It appears that he had been camping in the woods and had come to town for food.

Worsham transported Young to a Madison County Deputy to be booked into jail for the outstanding charges of Domestic Violence 1st - Stalking, 2 Felony Probation Revocations and Domestic Violence 2nd - Burglary 2nd.

We would like to commend Sumner for his keen eye and quick report and willingness to help anytime he is able. He is a valuable team member here at the Owens Cross Roads Police Department.

Today, the City of Owens Cross Roads joins our nation in honoring Patriot Day and remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We remember the innocent victims, the courageous first responders, and the brave men and women who answered the call to serve. We also honor the families whose lives were forever changed.

May we never forget their sacrifice, the strength of our nation, and the unity that brought Americans together in the days that followed.

Patriot Day Ceremony

The City of Owens Cross Roads invites our community to join us for a time of remembrance on Friday, September 11, at 7:30 a.m.

Members of Owens Cross Roads Fire & Rescue, the Owens Cross Roads Police Department, and City employees will gather at the flagpole to honor the lives lost, the heroes who courageously responded, and the sacrifices made on September 11, 2001.

TE MCKINNEY CIRCLE PARTIAL CLOSING - Due to a sinkhole that has formed under the pavement in the 130-140 area of TE McKinney Circle, barricades have been put in place to prevent vehicles and play vehicles such as bicycles from going near the opening. KEEP OUT OF THE BARRICADED AREA! DO NOT MOVE BARRICADES OR ALLOW CHILDREN TO PLAY IN OR AROUND THE BARRICADED AREA.

The opening in the pavement is about 18" wide, however, visual inspection revealed that the unstable area with a void is more on the order of 5 feet across and of varying depths ranging from a foot to 3 feet deep just judging by what our officer could see with a flashlight. The pavement is not supported enough to bear weight. The city is in touch with the city engineer concerning the issue.

Beau’s Law goes into effect on October 1st 2026. This law deals with the humane treatment of dogs. The law includes some common sense steps to safely and humanely secure your dogs. They deserve our care!

Violations of the law in the city limits will be investigated by our department. If a violation is found, those cases will go before municipal court.

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY ENFORCEMENT CONTINUES - The Owens Cross Roads Police Department has been stepping up our enforcement at school bus stops. We have been issuing citations only - NO WARNINGS for those caught passing a school bus with red flashing lights activated. We take the safety of our children very serious.

When a school bus activates the amber flashing lights, that is your time to slow and begin preparing to stop. Give the bus plenty of space. Anticipate the red lights at any moment as the bus is coming to a stop. You should be slowing to a stop as well - not rushing to beat the red lights on the bus.

You never know when a child may run after a homework assignment that blew out of their hand or run after some dropped item that may have tumbled into a lane of traffic.

In addition to our patrol car cameras, school buses now have cameras themselves. We have access to both videos for court in addition to data on when the lights were flashing on the bus. You also should know that Alabama law has an exception for bringing charges for these violations: " 32-5A-154(e) If the driver of any vehicle is witnessed by a peace officer or the driver of a school bus to have violated this section and the identity of the driver of the vehicle is not otherwise apparent, it shall be an inference that the person in whose name such vehicle is registered committed the violation..."

Please brush up on the laws concerning when stopping for a school bus is required in the graphic with this post. We certainly want to thank the vast majority of drivers that do the right thing each day!

MURDER SUSPECT CAPTURED - Today, around 10:20 AM, the Madison County dispatch relayed a report of a possible sighting of a murder suspect in the Hampton Cove area. The incident had happened yesterday in New Hope and our officers, along with other area agencies, had been looking for the suspect. Officer Monson was on patrol and began heading toward Hampton Cove to check the report. Sergeant Bakker was working an off-duty job at a church, as was Officer Wilson at another church. The two decided to leave and assist Monson. Bakker was just ahead of Monson on 431 when our dispatch, Echo911, received a tip that the suspect was further south in Owens Cross Roads on 431 just north of Cave Spring Rd.

As Bakker reached that area, he spotted a male walking on the side of 431 that matched the suspect's description and began slowing his patrol vehicle down. The suspect saw this and darted into the woods across the highway from the Post Office. Sgt. Bakker bailed out of his patrol vehicle in foot pursuit, radioing it into our dispatch. Monson and Wilson heard this. Reserve Officer Aaron Sumner was on his way in to work and drove to the scene. Wilson and Sumner went into the wooded area to help Bakker in the foot pursuit. Monson, coming in from the south, thought quickly and went off road to the other side of the wooded area and was able to catch the suspect that was running from the other officers in foot pursuit.

Monson turned the suspect, 23-year-old Donovan A Young, over to the Madison County Sheriff's Office when they arrived. Young was later booked into the Madison County Jail on a Murder - Domestic Violence charge.

We are certainly thankful for the call from the public that alerted us to the specific area as well as the fast communication from our dispatch, and their tracking of our units on foot. We are also would like to commend our officers for the quick manner in which they responded, their ability to think "on their feet" and quickly surround and capture this suspect.
