The third annual Rusk County 9/11 Memorial Walk is coming up soon (Saturday, September 12.)

The Henderson Noon Lions Club invited members of the Association to speak about the 9/11 Memorial Walk and why it was important for us to honor those who gave their lives responding to the World Trade Center in New York City. Upon conclusion of the presentation, they elected to not only sign up several individuals to walk, but they also chose to support it as a Diamond Sponsor! It was an unexpected but incredible surprise to our members. Thank you Henderson Lions Club for your generous support!

There is still time to sign up for the walk. Although the deadline has passed for a commemorative t-shirt, you can still sign up now or the day of the event.

Last night, we mentioned that the approaching tropical system was not forecast to give us much rain. Mother Nature decided she didn’t appreciate that tone. Our firefighters will welcome a slight reprieve from a busy month. Flood watch in effect until 7 AM Thursday.

New London VFD and the Texas A&M Forest Service are continuing to extinguish a grass and woods fire of approximately 4 acres in size near County Road 4148. At this time no structures are at risk and it is contained.

Expect to see heavy smoke in the area for the remainder of the day.

At approximately 14:00 this afternoon, the unit was dispatched as mutual aid to County Road 3206 to assist on a grass fire along with Carlisle Volunteer Fire Dept, Cushing VFD, Laneville Fire Department, Mount Enterprise VFD, New Salem VFD and Reklaw VFD.

From what we understand is that this was started from a burn pile but units on scene were able to fairly quickly get it under control. Just a reminder, just because we got maybe the slightest hint of rain, it doesn’t mean we can burn. Rusk County is still under a burn ban and that little tiny bit of rain did nothing but make it worse. Please don’t burn, especially now. It’s hot and it’s dangerous.

Registration is now open for the 2026 9/11 Memorial Walk, taking place on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
Each year, our community comes together to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the courage, service, and sacrifice of first responders, military personnel, and everyday heroes.
Register by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, August 31, 2026, to receive a complimentary 2026 9/11 Memorial Walk T-shirt. Be sure to select your shirt size when registering.
Registration will remain open through the day of the event; however, participants who register after August 31 will not receive a T-shirt due to production deadlines. All participants will receive a 2026 commemorative challenge coin.
