📣Make your voice heard!📣 KanCare, our state’s Medicaid program, supports thousands of Kansans every day in living independently and with dignity—and you can help shape how it supports those living with brain injury.

An upcoming hearing is scheduled for October 6-7 and your testimony can make a difference.

Individuals with lived experience, family members, caregivers, providers, and community advocates are encouraged to submit written testimony or speak in person during committee meetings. Sharing your story helps legislators understand how policies affect Kansans in their daily lives and provides valuable insight that data alone cannot capture.

Every testimony is an opportunity to raise awareness, influence policy discussions, and advocate for stronger, more accessible home and community-based services across Kansas.

DAN’S DAY THREE DISPATCH FROM ARKANSAS: AND THAT’S A WRAP!

Three days of conversations, learning, sharing ideas, challenging systems, and connecting with people who are fighting every day to make life better for people with brain injuries.

Today I had the privilege of presenting with Jason Ray, Jodi Fenner, and Jodi J. at the National Association of State Head Injury Administrators SOS Conference.

Our presentation, “Building Flexible TBI Supports: Telemedicine, Remote Technologies, and Cross System Funding,” was all about doing what too often gets forgotten in healthcare and disability services:

LISTEN TO THE PERSON.

Technology is changing. Systems are changing. Funding streams are changing.

But one thing should never change.

The person gets a voice. The person gets a choice. The person gets to be part of the decision.

At Minds Matter LLC, we know there is no one size fits all solution. What works for one person may be completely wrong for another.

So ask.

Listen.

Get creative.

Find a way.

And when the system tells you something can’t be done, keep pushing.

Because the bottom line is simple:

DO WHAT’S RIGHT.

Thank you to People First Communities and SimplyHome: Empowered by Technology for being leaders in this work and showing what is possible when we stop accepting “that’s the way we’ve always done it.”

And to everyone who stayed after our session to talk, ask questions, challenge ideas, and make connections, THANK YOU. Those conversations are where the real work begins.

And Crystal Cantu, you are making a HUGE impact in New Mexico. They are damn lucky to have a fierce advocate like you fighting to grow services and create better opportunities for people with brain injuries.

I’m leaving Arkansas with new connections, new ideas, and an even stronger reminder of why we do this work.

We don’t stand near the fire.

WE ARE THE FIRE. 🔥

DAN’S DISPATCH FROM LITTLE ROCK

Day 2 — National Association of State Head Injury Administrators Conference

Little Rock is the place to be this week as the National Association of State Head Injury Administrators (NASHIA) Conference brings together some of the brightest leaders, advocates, and organizations in the country working to improve the lives of people with brain injuries.

Judy Dettmer and her team have done a phenomenal job creating a conference filled with energy, meaningful content, and opportunities to learn from one another. I’m here with Emily Haug, Erica Bates, Sommer Hatfield, and Keri Kahle, and we are turning the wheels—learning, connecting, and bringing new ideas back home to Kansas and Minds Matter LLC.

And Arkansas is showing us how it’s done! Our incredible Arkansas peers are putting on a “Hosting 101” Masterclass. When your hosts know how to put on a conference, you learn from the best. Spiced pecans for the win!

Tomorrow, I’ll have the opportunity to present on behalf of Minds Matter LLC. I’m looking forward to sharing what we’ve learned, what we’re building, and why innovative, person-centered brain injury rehabilitation matters now more than ever.
