Bonnie Barton Gibson was born November 14th, 1933, in Holbrook, AZ, to Hugh and Ruth Barton. She was their third daughter and their first to be born in Navajo County. They grew up playing on the huge boulders on the West side of Holbrook. Rocks became a large part of her life. Her father, Hugh, was a petrified wood miner. They made and sold polished stones, traveling across the Southwest from New Mexico to the Grand Canyon.
One of her favorite memories was when her Grandfather would come to town in his horse-drawn wagon. The kids would pile in the wagon, and they would go down the famous Route 66.
Bonnie attended Holbrook School and graduated from Holbrook High School in 1953. She played a bugle and marched in parades and events with the Holbrook Marching Band throughout high school.
Holbrook was a Western town, and Bonnie was a trendsetter. She wore her Cowboy Boots to church with her best dresses. Her Father always wore a Cowboy Hat and told stories about the West, cowboys, and cattle. In 1954, she met Richard Gibson, a local cowboy from Heber, AZ. On July 16th, 1955, they were married in a ceremony at the local Methodist church, with a reception following in Heber.
Richard and Bonnie took up residence at the Gibson property called The Black Canyon Ranch in July 1955. Bonnie traded in Crinoline Skirts for Jeans and Pearl Snap shirts; she learned how to be a “real Cowgirl.” She had many adventures on the ranch over the next 69 years. Richard and Bonnie raised three children, Edward, Larry, and Kathy. The family worked together, gathering cattle, branding, hauling water, mending fences, and tending to all the ranch duties.
Bonnie was locally famous for her fresh baked goods and pies. For the last ten years, she baked for her daughter Kathy’s Farmers Market in Overgaard. Customers came to the Market to hear Bennie’s stories as much as they came to purchase food. She always had a smile and a kind greeting for everyone.
Bonnie is survived by her sons Edward and Larry, his wife Janet, Daughter Kathy and her husband Kenneth Garvin, Grandchildren Travis-Roxanna, Shane-Amber, Will-Alicia, Frank Despain, and Dirk Boatman, many Great-Grandchildren and adopted children, her sister Lauraine Sutherland, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Bonnie was greeted in heaven by her Parents, Grandparents, her precious Granddaughter Holly Despain, and her Great-Grandson Larry Paul Boatman.
The Family is hosting a Celebration of Life, Bonnie’s Last Roundup and Potluck on October 12, 2024, 11:00 AM at 1528 Black Canyon Road, Heber, AZ, The Black Canyon Ranch. Bonnie loved life on the ranch and feeding people; we will celebrate her amazing life in true Bonnie Style. Call 480-570-1586 for details and/or to text your RSVP.

Mom's surgery went well. When she was coming out of anesthesia they asked her if she wanted a cracker. Her response. "Well actually I would like lamb with apple jalapeño jelly." So, since I am the good daughter (the only daughter) it was lamb chops, sweet potatoes asparagus and a side of apple mint Jelly for supper. She is doing well and the medical staff couldn't believe she is 90, almost 91.

I'm sorry we haven't been open and we will be closed again this weekend. I have been fighting a fever for 17 days. I'm feeling a little better today but I'm going to take it slow. The elderberry crop has been the sweetest ever with juice so dark you can't see through it. We hope to complete our harvest and have jars available in the near future. We will see how October shapes up. Fall has arrived and freezing temperatures aren't far away. It was 38 at our farm this morning.

I have been a patient of Arthur Wayne Hardy for over 10 years. I was surprised when I went to his office at the beginning of the summer and the office was locked with a note on the door saying he retired. Something didn't seem right, his staff told us to come in that day. That is some of the backstory and I don't want to make this post about that. I have been sick running a high fever for just over a week. I contacted a friend of mine to see if Dr Hardy had "landed" somewhere. I felt like I received a miracle, she told me he is seeing patients through housecalls or other arrangements. She gave me his number and he came to my house for an appointment this morning. WE LOVE THIS MAN. He listens, he's thorough, he's kind, he makes excellent common sense recommendations. He has helped our family through many medical issues. If you are one of his patients or really want to be, I can give you his number. He told us he is not retired and plans to keep seeing patients as long as he can lift his stethoscope.
