Another “late baby” fawn! Let’s hope this little one’s time gets extended🤞🤞🤞

Meet Liberty❤️

This newborn white tail deer fawn was just born in September. Normally fawns are born in April and May in Michigan. He was found curled up next to his deceased mother and weighs only 4 lbs with blue eyes and an umbilical cord. The good news is he is doing very well. The bad news is Michigan law requires all fawns in rehabilitation to be released by October 1. Normal rehabilitation time for a Fawn is 3 to 5 months. We will be requesting proper rehabilitation time from the DNR otherwise he would have to be euthanized by law. Say a prayer!

This storm will cause lots of wildlife to be displaced! Please check your yard and surrounding area and get the animals off the ground and into a box/bin/carrier with a soft blanket! Reach out to a licensed wildlife Rehabber to point you in the right direction! We can guide you for possible reunites with mama or to a rehabber that takes the species you find.

Keeping them warm and safe is critical right now!

Another “hit-by-car” fawn — that makes FOUR since Sunday! Margaret found this beautiful doe on her side and struggling. Luckily her neighbor works at Cahill Vet Hospital in Flat Rock, which is where my Subpermittee, Mallory, also works! We wanted to give a HUGE shout out to Margaret, Laura, Brody, and Kocki for transporting the fawn to Cahill and then going back to pick the fawn up and transporting her an hour down to us! Thank you Mallory, Dr. Butto, and the staff at Cahill Vet Hospital for checking the fawn out, taking x-rays, cleaning her up and medicating her. The fawn is resting right now and we’re hoping she can recover. The x-rays showed nothing was broken but with all the road rash on her she took quite a spin after being hit! Good vibes needed for her!

Another SUPER busy weekend! I was invited to Adventures Inc in Milan for an event and we had a great time! I was a consultant on a wonderful children’s book “Into the Thicket” written by Gail Kuhnlein, and illustrated by John Megahan! Laura and Melissa hosted the event and the kids had a great time! They asked lots of good questions about wildlife.

This morning we got a call about a fawn who was hit by a car in Dearborn — once again Cheyla had transport set up within minutes and once again Darlene volunteered to retrieve and transport! While we prepared for the fawn, two men showed up with a coyote who had also been hit by a car. She was a beautiful and healthy female who now had two broken back legs and internal injuries. I don’t take coyote here so I immediately started to contact some of the Rehabbers who could help. Before I could reach anyone the poor girl started having seizures and we felt the best thing for her would be to humanely euthanize. 😭

The fawn arrived and we are making her comfortable until we can get her to the vet tomorrow. We suspect a broken back. We also moved two more fawns to the fawn pen out back — one is “Independence” who arrived 4th of July weekend as a newborn who was abandoned by mama (Darlene also transported this fawn here). The other fawn arrived back in May when Conservation Officer Ingersoll brought him. His back end was all ripped up and full of maggots. It took months for him to heal but he’s all better now!

We have two fawns still in the barn — they are only a couple weeks old. One has a swelled up head and the other is just young. Hopefully both can move back to the fawn pen with all the others soon.

Where did the summer go????? Can’t believe we’re in mid August already! And fawns are still arriving! We took in another one week old fawn today! Luckily our two goat milk suppliers, (Jen and Maliah) are still donating fresh goats milk so the babies get a really great start!

Our friend and fellow Rehabber, Lee, shared a huge donation of apples and cabbage with us today! The horses and donkeys got some, I tossed a bunch all over the woods for the squirrels, fawns and other critters! This was a first for the fawns and they LOVE the fresh, crisp apples!

I need to set traps for four kittens in the fawn pen — cats get dumped here all the time🤬 and sometimes they have kittens! We need to get them safe before winter hits!

Erica contacted us this evening about a fawn who was hit by a car — she saw it unfold right in front of her! She said the fawn was not able to stand. We immediately contacted Cheyla to see if anyone from the transport team was able to retrieve this big girl and get her here. Darlene was right on it — she has transported several fawns for us this summer! The fawn has some scrapes and missing hair — no bones sticking out but we suspect it may have a broken pelvis and possibly internal damage. She was not dehydrated but we gave her some fluids, pain meds, cleaned up the scrapes and coated them with antibiotic cream. Hoping she gets a good nights rest and we can get her in for x-rays in the morning!🤞🤞🤞

These animals have grown up to be strong and healthy during the summer. Most have recovered from some pretty severe traumas — luckily they don’t even remember!

Release day is right around the corner!
