This afternoon, Otsego Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire in the 200 block of W. Allegan Street in the City of Otsego. All occupants were able to exit safely, and crews quickly brought the fire under control. Unfortunately, the structure sustained significant damage.

We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to Allegan County Central Dispatch, Alamo Township Firefighters Association, Gun Plain Township Fire Department, Plainwell Area EMS, Plainwell Department of Public Safety, Otsego Police, and VanDam & Kruisinga for their invaluable assistance. Incidents like this remind us how essential our mutual aid partners are—we truly couldn’t do it without you.

The State of Michigan is conducting a Statewide Tornado Drill today at 1:00 PM. Please be aware that Allegan County will NOT be activating its outdoor warning sirens as part of this drill. However, your NOAA Weather Radio may activate, as the National Weather Service will be participating in the drill.

Activating sirens outside of our normal testing parameters has historically led to public confusion, unnecessary fear, and a significant increase in 9-1-1 calls. In the interest of public safety and clear communication, we have chosen not to participate in the siren activation portion of the drill.

Our regularly scheduled monthly siren test will proceed as planned on Friday, April 3, 2026 at 11:00 AM.

With the City of Otsego, Michigan DPW doing their part to open roadways and push back snow, we’re asking for your help to keep fire hydrants accessible.

Clearing snow around hydrants is critical for a fast and effective emergency response. Please take a moment to help keep our community safe by following these steps:

-Clear a 3-foot radius around all sides of the hydrant using a shovel or snowblower.

-Create a clear path from the roadway to the hydrant so it can be quickly accessed in an emergency.

Your help makes a real difference—thank you for doing your part! 🚒❄️
