Labette County Emergency Management maintains the Emergency Operations Center located at 718 5th Street at the Law Enforcement Center. Emergency management is the process of coordinating available resources to deal with emergencies effectively, thereby saving lives, avoiding injury and minimizing economic loss. This protection process involves four phases:

Mitigation -- Acting to reduce the po

ssibility of a disaster occurring or reduce losses from a disaster. Preparation -- Writing plans, identifying resources, negotiating agreements, training and exercising plans and resources. Response -- Mobilization of forces using the resources available to stabilize a situation. Recovery -- Immediate and long-term efforts to help the community return to near normal conditions again. Labette County Emergency Management works in conjunction with area first responders, including law enforcement agencies, fire departments, emergency medical services, 911 emergency communications and others, as well as with regional, state and federal agencies when needed.

🧰 FOUND MILWAUKEE PACKOUT – PLEASE SHARE

A Good Samaritan turned in a Milwaukee PACKOUT storage system containing several items that was found near the 4-way stop in Oswego. It appears to have fallen from the back of a truck or vehicle.

The PACKOUT is currently being held at the Sheriff’s Office.

If you believe it belongs to you, please contact or stop by the Sheriff’s Office. You will need to accurately identify the PACKOUT and its contents in order to claim it.

The Labette County Treasurer’s office located at the Labette County Courthouse in Oswego, will be closed on Friday, September 4, from 10 am to 1 pm so employees may attend a funeral. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

It looks like the heat is sticking around! We’re expecting heat index values around 104°F over the next 5 days.

With several days of hot and humid conditions ahead, please make heat safety part of your daily routine:

💧 Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
❄️ Take breaks in air conditioning whenever possible.
👵 Check on family, friends, neighbors, and older adults who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
🐾 Keep pets cool and hydrated and limit time on hot pavement.
🚗 Never leave children or pets in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.

Heat-related illness can happen quickly. Know your limits, take frequent breaks if you’re working outdoors, and don’t wait until you feel thirsty to hydrate.

✅ Highway 59 Reopened ✅

Highway 59 from the roundabout to 18000 has reopened to traffic.

Update! Highway 59 is open!!!

🚨 Traffic Alert 🚨

Highway 59 is currently closed from the roundabout to 18000 due to a severe injury accident.

At this time, there is no estimated reopening time. Please avoid the area, use an alternate route, and allow emergency responders the space they need to work safely.

We’ll share updates as more information becomes available.

☀️ EXTREME HEAT WARNING ☀️

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for our area today from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Heat index values could reach 115°F, creating dangerous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors.

🌡️ Take these precautions to stay safe:
💧 Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
🏠 Stay indoors in air conditioning whenever possible.
👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
⏰ Limit outdoor activities to the early morning or evening.
👶👵 Check on elderly family members, neighbors, young children, and anyone without air conditioning.
🐾 Make sure pets have plenty of fresh water and shade. Walk them early or late in the day to protect their paws from hot pavement.
🚗 Never leave children, adults, or pets in a parked vehicle—temperatures can become deadly within minutes.

⚠️ Know the warning signs:
• Heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, or headache may be signs of heat exhaustion.
• Confusion, loss of consciousness, hot/dry skin, or a body temperature above 103°F may indicate heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately.

Please take this warning seriously and help spread the word by checking on friends, family, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable.
