A successful 2026 D.A.R.E Day!!!

Beginning at 9:00 AM at the Oswego Ks Community Building, students and staff from across Labette County came together for the 2026 D.A.R.E. Day event. Fifth graders from multiple schools had the opportunity to learn important lessons about making positive choices, standing against peer pressure, and creating safer communities for everyone.

One of the highlights of the day was watching the teamwork and dedication displayed by the Oswego Police Department K9 Unit and the Labette County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit. Oswego Police Department K9 Tupac alongside Officer Kessler, and Labette County Sheriff’s Office K9 Champ alongside Deputy Eichinger, put on demonstrations that showcased not only the incredible abilities of our K9 partners, but also the strong bond, trust, and discipline that exists between handlers and their dogs. Chief Bond was also in attendance supporting the event and helping make the day a success for our youth and community. Might we add, he received over 20 apprehension bites!

These demonstrations are more than just exciting to watch, they give our young students an opportunity to see law enforcement in a positive and personal way. Events like D.A.R.E. Day help build relationships, trust, and understanding between officers and the next generation.

A statement from Officer Kessler:

“Law enforcement K9’s are much more than police dogs, they are partners, protectors, and members of our law enforcement family. K9’s like Tupac and Champ help keep our communities safe every single day, whether it’s locating suspects, tracking missing persons, detecting narcotics, or simply creating positive interactions with the public. Seeing the excitement and engagement from the fifth graders today reminds us why these events matter so much. These kids are our future, and if we can leave them with a positive experience, inspire respect, trust, and confidence, then we’ve done something meaningful. We are incredibly thankful to everyone who attended and helped make this year’s D.A.R.E. Day such a success!”

A huge thank you goes out to all organizers, teachers, staff, students, law enforcement personnel, and community members who helped make today possible. The continued support and involvement from our communities is what makes Labette County such a special and safe place! It was an everlasting memory to be a part of!

On Sunday night, our community faced a moment that reminded us just how powerful nature can be—and how strong a community can stand together in response.

At approximately 9:23 PM, a confirmed tornado touched down in close proximity to the Oswego city limits. In the moments that followed, what we witnessed was not just the aftermath of a storm, but the overwhelming strength, compassion, and unity of our community.

From the very beginning, volunteers from both near and far stepped forward without hesitation. Local businesses opened their doors and gave what they could. The Red Cross and Salvation Army quickly mobilized to provide care and comfort to those in need. News stations helped keep the public informed, while storm spotters remained vigilant, ensuring rapid awareness and response.

In the midst of it all, the Labette County Dispatch operators served as the steady voice behind the scenes—the true lifeline of this response. Additional personnel were brought in to handle the surge of calls, ensuring that every emergency, every concern, and every request for help was answered without delay. Their ability to remain calm under pressure, coordinate resources, and maintain seamless communication between agencies was nothing short of exceptional. When seconds mattered most, their professionalism, dedication, and precision helped keep operations running smoothly and ensured that help was always just a call away. Their work often goes unseen, but it is absolutely vital— Sunday night, they exemplified the very best of what public service stands for.

Our city crews worked tirelessly through the night and into the day, putting in countless hours to clear debris and restore safety. Evergy responded immediately, working diligently to begin restoring power as quickly as possible. The Kansas Department of Transportation also provided critical assistance in keeping roadways safe and accessible.

This response would not have been possible without the seamless teamwork and dedication of the agencies involved, including the Kansas Highway Patrol, Oswego Police Department, Oswego Fire Department, Labette Health EMS, Labette County Sheriff’s Department, Chetopa Fire Department, and many others who stood ready to assist at a moment’s notice.

Chief Bond would like to personally express his deepest gratitude to every individual who stepped in to help—whether it was clearing debris, providing resources, checking on neighbors, or simply offering support during a difficult time. Your willingness to serve does not go unnoticed. Chief Bond also wants to recognize the exceptional coordination and professionalism displayed by all responding agencies. The way each organization worked side by side, with a shared mission of protecting and serving our community, is something we can all be proud of! While storms may test us, they also reveal the heart of a community—and Oswego’s heart is strong, resilient, and united.

Thank you to everyone who played a part in helping our town begin the road to recovery. We are truly stronger together.

⚠️ SAFETY SUNDAY ⚠️

School’s almost out, summer is right around the corner, and we’re already seeing more kids (and adults!) out enjoying the sunshine on their bicycles 🚲☀️

With the increase in activity, we’ve also had several close calls and safety concerns reported so far this year. We want to help keep everyone safe while still having fun!

Here are a few quick reminders for both riders and parents:

• Always wear a helmet – it makes a huge difference
• Ride on the right side of the road, with traffic
• Use hand signals when turning
• Stay alert – no headphones or distractions while riding
• Make sure bikes have reflectors or lights if riding in the evening
• Parents: take a few minutes to go over basic road safety with your kids

Drivers, we ask that you also stay alert and watch for bicyclists, especially in neighborhoods and around parks.

Let’s work together to make this a safe and fun summer for everyone in Oswego! 💙

🌧️ Rainy Weather Reminder – Drive Safe, Oswego!

With the recent rain across our area, we want to remind everyone to slow down and stay alert on the roadways. Wet pavement can quickly become dangerous, increasing stopping distance and the risk of hydroplaning.

A few simple tips can make all the difference:

• Turn your headlights ON – it’s not just about seeing, it’s about being seen.
• Reduce your speed and increase following distance.
• Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns.
• Watch for standing water

In Kansas, headlights are required when visibility is limited—including during rain. It’s a small step that can prevent big accidents.

Let’s work together to keep our roads safe for everyone. Drive smart, stay visible, and get home safely.
