Emergency Management

Planning for Emergencies

The director of emergency management is a full-time position working on a contingency plan for the county in the event of a disaster. Each level of government is responsible to handle their own emergency until the emergency reaches beyond thei

r capabilities or resources. The county emergency plan is ready to activate at a moment’s notice from any incorporated municipality in the county. The county emergency plan is also ready for activation in the event the emergency directly affects those living in the county. While assistance may be available it is the expectation of each and every citizen to be able to take care of themselves for the first 72 hours. Emergency Management Goals

The goals of Jefferson County Emergency Management are to:
•Coordinate a unified response to a crisis
•Prevent or minimize the threat when possible
•Respond quickly and effectively when prevention is not possible

KDHE has issued a Boil Water Order for Lakeside Village in Jefferson County, Kansas until further notice

BOTTLE WATER IS AVAILABLE AT THE OFFICE.

Boil Water Order Issued for Lakeside Village Improvement District, Jefferson Co.

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a Boil Water Order for the Lakeside Village Improvement District located in Jefferson County.

Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.

Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.

Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.

Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.

This Order is effective October 30, 2024 and will remain in effect until distribution system samples indicate the system is no longer at risk of bacterial contamination. KDHE officials issued the Order because a water main break and a loss of pressure in the system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

Regardless of whether the public water supplier or KDHE announced a boil water advisory, only KDHE can issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.

If you have questions, please contact the Lakeside Village Office or you may call KDHE at 785-296-5795. For consumer information please visit KDHE’s PWS Consumer Information webpage: http://www.kdheks.gov/pws/emergencyresponse/water_disruption.htm

Restaurants and other food establishments that have questions about the impact of the boil water advisory on their business can contact the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s food safety & lodging program at [email protected] or call 785-564-6767.

Fire Weather Planning Forecast
National Weather Service Topeka KS
411 AM CDT Tue Oct 29 2024
DISCUSSION...

Fire weather concerns remain high due to strong winds.

Winds will remain strong through the day today and these winds are expected to bring higher lower level moisture to the region. This should keep minimum RH values around 40 percent or better through the afternoon. This is expected to mitigate fire danger and limit chances for Red Flag conditions.

Nevertheless fire danger will be high to very high given southerly winds gusting between 35 and 50 mph. Mixing heights are expected to be around 3500 FT provide excellent conditions for smoke dispersal.

A cold front will move through on Wednesday with showers and
thunderstorms along the boundary.

Rain amounts for forecast to range form a half inch to around 1 inch with locally higher totals.

Cooler weather returns Thursday. Then a wet pattern sets up for the
weekend. Highs this weekend are forecast to be in the 60s with
occasional showers and storms.

Fire Weather Planning Forecast
National Weather Service Topeka KS
345 AM CDT Sat Oct 26 2024
DISCUSSION...

A typical late October day is expected today with similar
conditions to yesterday except for a bit less wind. Winds should
generally be between 5-10mph while turning from the NNE early to
the east and southeast by afternoon.

Minimum RH looks to be in the 25-30% range this afternoon under mostly sunny skies. A warming trend starts Sunday with increasing winds into the early part of the week. Monday and Tuesday look very warm and windy with sustained southerly winds at 20-30mph and gusts to 45mph.

Fortunately, an increase in low-level moisture looks to keep fire
danger lower than it otherwise would be, with RH in the 30-45%
range Monday and slightly higher Tuesday. Still, the strong winds
and dry fuels could lead to elevated fire concerns both days. Our
next chance for rain comes Wednesday with a cold front.

JEFFERSON COUNTY KANSAS - FRIDAY - 10-25-2024 - BURN BAN CONTINUES

Even with the rain last night, due to windy conditions today and the continued dry grass conditions and lowering humidity - the Burn Ban will continue Friday.

Fire Weather Planning Forecast
National Weather Service Topeka KS
421 AM CDT Fri Oct 25 2024
DISCUSSION...

Fire weather concerns will be elevated today for breezy
winds and lower RH.

Surface high pressure will build into the area today. This
will bring breezy north and northwest winds to the area with
gusts between 20 and 30 mph through mid-afternoon. Dry air
will also move in with the high pressure. But with cooler
temperatures, minimum RH values are forecast to be around
25 percent or better.

This is forecast to cause high range-land fire danger.

Mixing heights up to 4 KFT should provide good to excellent conditions for smoke dispersal.

Lighter winds are forecast for Saturday and Sunday while
temperatures remain more seasonal.

However warm and windy weather is forecast for Monday and Tuesday. There is a 75 percent chance south and southwest winds will gust to 30 mph or greater on Monday for a majority of the area with stronger winds possible Tuesday. Fortunately with the wind
is expected to be higher moisture and RH values look to
remain above 30 percent.

Still with fuels curing, these winds are likely to create very high fire danger for both Monday and Tuesday. A frontal boundary is projected to move through the area on Wednesday with a 30 to 60 percent chance of rain.
