Amazing things have been happening in our Jail!

We’ve been offering an array of programs for several years…. because we have all recognized what we’ve always done, doesn’t work. These newer programs that we have supported the last several years are working. People are being held accountable for their past actions AND they are learning new ways of doing things for a better path forward.

Hear it here first hand.

The IN2WORK program, run by Aramark, teaches food service skills to incarcerated individuals and offers up to $10,000 in scholarships for graduates and their dependents.

Taking a second to give a shout out to our ahh-maaazz-ing Correctional staff ~~ they have been absolutely crushing it the last several days! In the 120-hour period that encompassed the long weekend, 71 persons were booked into our jail (countywide arrests) and 41 were released. Additionally, 43 persons arrested over the long weekend will have court appearances, likely today or tomorrow, related to those arrests. The facility peaked at 318 people in the jail, which is the largest population we have seen in recent memory.

These numbers might not mean much to the average person – but to us, the signifies just how ridiculously busy they were.

This Labor Day, we are especially grateful for the people who have worked tirelessly for our communities.

In the weeks since the tornado, we have seen public works crews, first responders, utility workers, contractors, nonprofit partners, volunteers, local businesses, government employees and so many others give their time, skills and energy to help our neighbors recover.

Some of that work has been highly visible. Much of it has happened quietly, day after day.

To everyone who has helped — and continues to help — thank you. We know recovery takes time, and we are incredibly grateful to have so many people working alongside our community.

We wish you a safe and restful Labor Day.

During the 2024 Labor Day holiday (6 p.m. September 1 - 5:59 a.m. September 5), there were 505 crash fatalities nationwide. Of those people, 170 (34%) were killed in crashes that involved at least one alcohol-impaired driver with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or above.

Recently Captain Corey Haag of the Fox Crossing Police Department was presented with a SWAT recognition award for his 8 years of dedicated service to the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office Regional SWAT Team. Captain Haag and his K9 partner "Hans" served on the SWAT Team from 2017-2025.

• Over the 2023 Labor Day holiday, 505 drivers were killed in traffic crashes.
• 100 (33%) drivers were alcohol-impaired with a BAC .08 or above.
• Seventy-seven (77%) of the 100 impaired drivers killed were almost twice the legal limit (BAC .15+).
• Among drivers between the ages of 18 and 34 who were killed in crashes over the Labor Day holiday in 2024, 40% of those drivers were drunk, with BACs of .08 or above.
