Summer storms can turn severe in a blink. Stay weather aware!

As always, the Osawatomie Public Library remains our community's designated storm shelter and will be made available if/when severe weather enters our area.

Important notes for anyone planning to utilize the community shelter:

- Plan ahead! Prepare a "go bag" of supplies, including phone chargers or battery packs, snacks and water bottles, medications, and pet supplies that you can grab on a moment's notice.

- Secured, well-behaved pets are able to seek shelter with their families. Pets, regardless of size, must be in carriers or kennels, or kept on very short leashes. Owners are responsible for their pets, including cleanup and behavior. Free roaming is not permitted.

- Communicate your family safety plan NOW, so everyone knows what to do when the time comes.

----

If a severe thunderstorm warning is issued for Osawatomie and/or Miami County, our public safety team will respond and staff the Osawatomie Public Library (527 Brown Avenue) as an emergency storm shelter for the duration of the severe weather event.

Whenever the shelter is activated, we post here on Facebook and send a text message alert through the City's "OZALERTS" notification group made available via TextMyGov. If you're not already subscribed, you can opt-in to these alerts by texting the keyword "OZALERTS" to phone number 91896 and following the prompts.

Please take time now to identify other shelters that may be available to you, such as nearby churches or neighbors with basements. Every second counts when responding to severe weather!
