1st Vermont Cavalry

1st Vermont Cavalry The 1st Vermont Cavalry, Co K: living historians, educators, and reenactors; focus is Civil War Cav.

Of the 258 Union cavalry regiments during the Civil War, few performed more arduous service or took part in more engagements than did the 1st Vermont Cavalry. From 1861 – 1865 the 1st Vermont achieved a reputation as one of the hardest fighting volunteer cavalry regiments. As reenactors, we participate in parades, local Civil War living history events, and trail rides. A couple of times a year we

load up horses and gear to head South for larger events that can have hundreds mounted troopers and thousands of other soldiers and civilians. The schooling of cavalry horses is much the same as other disciplines. They need to be introduced step by step to gun fire and field drilling. Most horses adapt quite well and soon learn to stand quietly around active artillery pieces and musket volleys. If you enjoy horses, history, camping, and guns this may be for you!

The Wilder Homestead event is always a great time! This year the HL Hunley travelling exhibit came to Wilder. Our Vermonters were permitted to take positions inside the exhibit to get a feel for the short lives of Huntley crews.
