This week, we’re celebrating National Groundwater Awareness Week! This annual event highlights the importance of groundwater and responsible use. Groundwater powers our community—supporting our growers, biodiversity, and our homes and businesses.

The Wyandotte Creek GSA promotes sustainable groundwater use in several ways, including a four-pronged approach to enhancing sustainability:

💧Maximize Use of Surface Water – Expand the use of existing surface water supplies to reduce reliance on groundwater.

💧Maximize Recharge Opportunities – Enhance natural and managed groundwater recharge to replenish aquifers.

💧Reduce Demand – Implement conservation measures and efficiency improvements across all sectors.

💧Vision, Planning, and Partnerships – Foster collaboration among stakeholders to develop and implement effective water management solutions.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Wyandotte Creek GSA’s recent workshop on the Regional Conjunctive Use Project! Your input is helping shape this critical effort to balance water resources more effectively.

The project focuses on assessing whether we can use more surface water when available—either to reduce groundwater pumping (“in lieu” use) or to directly recharge the groundwater. If possible, we may be able to lessen the impact of pumping on the subbasin.

As a next step, our consultants will continue their research and analysis, incorporating the valuable input gathered during the meeting. We appreciate your engagement and look forward to sharing updates as the project progresses!

Forty percent of California’s water use comes from groundwater! Here in the Wyandotte Creek Subbasin, groundwater supports daily life—cooking, cleaning, and even watering the crops that fuel our local economy.

Because groundwater replenishes slowly, it can be depleted if overused. That’s why managing it wisely is so important. Prudent groundwater management helps ensure a reliable supply during droughts, strengthens our resilience to climate change, and preserves this vital resource for future generations.
