Hearthstone School has been an integral program through Butte County Office of Education since the 1980’s. We began as Butte County Home Study and in the mid 1990’s developed our charter, partnering with Four Winds School under the umbrella of Learning Community Charter School. We serve approximately 200 students in grades TK-12 throughout Butte County and all contiguous counties. Hearthstone Scho
ol is an independent learning program that provides students the opportunity to complete much of their learning at home. With the guidance of a credentialed teacher, students complete assignments as prescribed in the Student Learning Plan, completing 4-6 hours of schoolwork per day depending on the students’ grade level. Assignments target grade levels standards and the curriculum provided is standards-aligned; however, Student Learning Plans are individualized based on the students’ academic needs. Parents play an essential role in the facilitation and monitoring of the students’ daily schoolwork. Communication between the parents, student and the teacher is vital to ensure that students have the support they get the most out of the learning experience. To further support our students’ learning, we offer on-site classes for enrichment and to address the individual academic needs of students. Some classes are voluntary and other classes are required for students to attend. In addition, fieldtrips and activities, organized by our Parent Liaison, provide students and parents/guardians with opportunities to learn in alternative ways, network and socialize. Field trips are low or no cost, and are geared for a variety of grade levels. Activities are offered on-site to provide enrichment experiences and hands-on learning. High school students also have the opportunity to further their education and/or pursue future career goals through Butte College’s Concurrent Enrollment Program, Career Technical Education(CTE) classes, and non-paid community internships.
