PRESS RELEASE

Fatal Hit-and-Run Investigation – State Route 162

Oroville, Calif. — On May 17, 2026, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) received reports of a pedestrian possibly down and in critical condition along State Route 162 near Kampong Court in Butte County.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and located an unresponsive male, later identified by the Butte County Sheriff’s Office as Michael Lloyd Blair of Oroville. Blair was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency personnel.

CHP officers from the Oroville Area Office initiated a traffic crash investigation. Based on evidence located at the scene, investigators determined Blair had been struck by a motor vehicle during the overnight hours between May 16 and May 17, 2026. Investigators also determined Blair was within the roadway at the time of the collision.

During the course of the investigation, CHP personnel identified evidence indicating the involved vehicle was a gray Kia Telluride. Utilizing multiple law enforcement investigative resources and technologies, including Flock camera systems and other investigative tools, CHP investigators were able to identify and locate a possible suspect vehicle and person of interest connected to the collision. The vehicle was subsequently examined and confirmed to have been involved in the incident.

The driver of the Kia Telluride was interviewed by investigators. Due to the limitations of the preliminary investigation at the time, no arrest was made.

The CHP is continuing to finalize the investigation and will be submitting the case to the Butte County District Attorney’s Office with a recommendation to file charges for violation of California Vehicle Code section 20001(a) – felony hit-and-run resulting in death or injury.

This investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information related to this collision is encouraged to contact the Oroville CHP Area Office.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Head-On Collision on State Route 162 Under Investigation

The California Highway Patrol is investigating a major injury traffic collision that occurred on State Route 162 near Wally B Lane on Saturday afternoon.

On May 23, 2026, at approximately 2:56 PM, CHP Dispatch received reports of a head-on collision initially believed to have occurred at the intersection of State Route 162 and Miners Ranch Road, with vehicles blocking the intersection. Officers from the CHP - Oroville area office responded and were first on scene, where they determined the collision had actually occurred on State Route 162 near Wally B Lane.

Personnel from the Lake Oroville State Recreational Area, CAL FIRE/Butte County, ButteCountyEMS, and Butte County Sheriff Office also responded to assist with emergency operations and medical aid.

Upon arrival, officers located a Dodge pickup truck with major front-end damage and a Toyota SUV that had also sustained major front-end damage. The driver of the Dodge pickup, a solo male occupant, sustained moderate to major injuries. The solo female driver of the Toyota SUV became trapped inside her vehicle and required extrication by emergency personnel, who removed the vehicle’s doors and steering wheel in order to safely free her.

The female driver was transported by air medics to a local hospital with major injuries and is currently reported to be in stable condition. The male driver was also transported with major injuries and is likewise reported to be in stable condition.

Based on preliminary investigation and evidence collected at the scene, it appears the Dodge pickup was traveling westbound on State Route 162, west of Apica Avenue, when, for reasons still under investigation, the driver allowed the vehicle to travel into the opposing lane of traffic. At the same time, the Toyota SUV was traveling eastbound toward the Dodge pickup’s location.

Investigators believe the driver of the Dodge pickup attempted to correct back to the right side of the roadway, while the driver of the Toyota SUV simultaneously steered to the left in an attempt to avoid a collision. Unfortunately, both vehicles turned into each other’s paths, resulting in a major head-on traffic collision.

The CHP is actively investigating this incident and will be contacting witnesses for additional information. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant information is encouraged to contact CHP Dispatch at 530-332-1200 and reference incident log number 260523CH0249 regarding the crash on State Route 162 at Wally B Lane.

The California Highway Patrol reminds motorists to remain attentive while driving, avoid distractions, and always stay within their designated lane of travel.

🇺🇸 Memorial Day Weekend is here, and the California Highway Patrol Oroville Area Office is out in full force during the Memorial Day Holiday Enforcement Period (HEP), running from Friday, May 22 through Monday, May 25.

While many are heading to BBQs, lakes, campgrounds, and family gatherings, our officers will be focused on keeping everyone safe on the roadways throughout Butte County and the surrounding areas. 🚔

This weekend, officers will be paying close attention to:
• Seatbelt violations
• Distracted driving
• Speeding
• DUI drivers
• Unsafe driving behaviors

Did you know? Wearing your seatbelt is still one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent serious injury or death in a crash. Buckling up takes only a few seconds but can make all the difference.

If your plans include alcohol, make sure you have a designated driver lined up before the first drink. A rideshare, sober friend, or taxi is a lot cheaper — and safer — than a DUI. 🍻➡️🚗❌

We also want to remind everyone that Memorial Day is more than just a long weekend. It is a time to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives while serving our country. 🇺🇸

From all of us at the Oroville CHP Area Office:
• Drive safe
• Buckle up
• Be patient in traffic
• Look out for one another
• And enjoy the holiday weekend responsibly

Thank you to all who served and sacrificed for our nation. ❤️🤍💙

Crash Alert 🚨 West of Richvale, CA, at the intersection of SR-162 and Aguas Frias Road.

On May 22, 2026, at approximately 11:53 a.m., officers from the CHP - Oroville Area office responded to a report of a traffic crash involving a Honda CR-V that entered an irrigation canal near the intersection of Aguas Frias Road and State Route 162.

Due to initial reports that the vehicle may have been submerged, CHP officers, along with CAL FIRE/Butte County and ButteCountyEMS personnel, responded urgently to the scene. Upon arrival, emergency responders located the vehicle in approximately one foot of water and confirmed the driver was not seriously injured.

Cal-Fire and CHP were able to safely assist the solo female driver from the vehicle and back to the roadway. She sustained only minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital as a precaution.

Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears the driver was traveling southbound on Aguas Frias Road and became distracted while approaching the intersection, causing her to fail to stop at the posted stop sign at State Route 162 before entering the canal.

The CHP would like to remind motorists that distracted driving continues to be one of the leading causes of traffic collisions. Drivers are encouraged to maintain a high visual horizon, stay alert to roadway conditions, and keep their full attention on driving at all times. A momentary distraction can have serious consequences.

Thankfully, this incident resulted in only very minor injuries.

🚨 Traffic Crash Investigation – Township Road & W. Evans Reimer Road 🚨

At approximately 4:30 PM, officers from the Oroville CHP Area office received reports of a traffic crash at the intersection of Township Road and W. Evans Reimer Road, south of Gridley. CHP officers, ButteCountyEMS, and CAL FIRE/Butte County personnel responded to the scene and determined two pickups had collided within the intersection due to an apparent failure to yield.

One involved party sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital as a precaution. The crash remains under investigation.

⚠️ Public Service Announcement ⚠️

This intersection continues to be a concern for our officers and the community. CHP regularly receives reports of motorists failing to stop on W. Evans Reimer Road before entering Township Road, creating hazardous situations for everyone traveling through the area. We also receive numerous complaints regarding speeding along Township Road.

Please remember:
🛑 Come to a complete stop at posted stop signs
👀 Look carefully in all directions before entering or crossing a roadway
🚗 Slow down and obey posted speed limits
🤝 Drive courteously and stay alert

A few extra seconds of caution can prevent a lifetime of consequences. Let’s all do our part to keep our roadways safe.
